Re: IROC Lovers?

Well I didn’t know this thread existed til now. I’ll be subscribing.

Taking a long family day trip tomorrow to pick this gem up for my oldest son. He’s a couple years away from getting his license, so we’ll have some time to get it road worthy.

1987 IROC, T-tops, 66k miles, 5.0L/auto. Garaged since 2005. Needs a few basic things but it’s all there!

Re: IROC Lovers?

I can’t wait to see what you do with it. Looks like it might still have the T-top bags in the rear compartment like mine does. I’ll be interested to see how your power rear hatch setup works too. I just had to clean and re-lube the gearbox in mine as was seized up, which causes a pretty stout battery draw. Looks like it still has gatorbacks on it like mine did too. Nice to see another factory radio too. Post up a pic of the spid in the center console when you get it. Be interesting to see what it’s got. Looks like it could be a 1SC package 3 loaded IROC.

Thirdgen.org is the place to go and learn a ton about these cars.

Re: IROC Lovers?

I’m still on the road, but wanted to share this. I’ll start a separate thread soon with more info…

Didn’t even have it fully tied down and we got the first “nice car man” from a passerby.

EDIT: just noticed my wheel chock in the pic. Better grab that! Lol

Re: IROC Lovers?

well replacing the hatch struts will help extend the life of the whole mechanism. Check the contacts and grease everything, lithium on the track itself and then dielectric on all the contacts. Those things are so temperamental. Plus anything harder than gently setting it on the latch will break it. Had a 91 Z/28 convertible than had to replace the whole system in it due to bad struts letting the lid slam down on it.

Nice score, I saw that car on criagslist a few times as I keep looking for my elusive teal Z/28. Looked like a really clean car.

Re: IROC Lovers?

BIG step forward getting the interior in order. I cleaned it out completely to see what I have to work with. Other than some water stains from the T tops on the seats, and a cracked dash, and a UV destroyed leather wrap on the steering wheel, it is quite nice inside. I’ll address the stains and the T top seals pretty soon. I’m in love with this car.

Re: IROC Lovers?

I always thought these were pretty cool looking. Never had one but was in the market for one around 1987. Was looking for a black HO one with blue accents. Checking insurance rates at that time I had to bow out and go with a '86 Mustang GT. Ugh but the Mustang was fun.

Re: IROC Lovers?

Tyler, it's looking great. The guy I bought my 71 from has now bought a really nice 84 and I have convinced him to LS swap it. I'll see if I can get some pics of it for you.

Re: IROC Lovers?

Made my way through both IROC threads.

Way to save this one!

I'd say build a 400ci+ FIRST TPI injected engine with your flavor of ECU and trans and call it a day.

Re: IROC Lovers?

Yea we’ll see what happens. I’m just enjoying it right now.

Did have to do both axle tube seals last week. The oe seals were fighters to say the least. Check out the original brake pads in the bottom pic.
