Re: My truck sucks...

The same holds true for whatever one would carry in the bed of a truck. The whole point is reducing the chance of ending up upsidedown in the ditch, and a little bit of weight over the rear tires is a good way to do it. A better way would be to convert your truck to front wheel drive. You 4 wheel drive guys could try this easy home expieriment: remove your rear driveshaft and drive around in snowy conditions in 4WD, although the front end is the only one working. You will find that you can go anywhere you can with all 4 working.

Re: My truck sucks...

I highly doubt front wheel drive would do any better in the snow than 4 wheel drive.
I know a hummer in the mud sucks with the rear 1/2 shafts removed.
True, anything should be secured... but I think ballast due to slick conditions is a little more important that something in the back durring the summer. Since the ballast will be there for 2 or 3 months, and your summer time load will be there a day... and plus, I'll go on a limb here and say you are more likely to end in the ditch... or even upsidedown... when it is slick out.

Just a hunch.

Honestly I don't drive my truck much on the roads during the winter because of all the salt they use. I do use it quite a bit on the lake however.
I gotta see that...no, wait....don't do that. I understand what you're saying. It's just that saying "on" the lake conjured up this picture in my feeble brain...

I wouldn't want to take 'em on salt-covered roads, either.

As for us down south, some can drive on snow and some can't. Anyone can drive on ice, though. The only problem is that everyone who is on the ice with you, has just as much control as you do....i.e., none. Watching Arkies on ice is truly an amazing event, whether they're in a 2WD truck with half a rick of firewood for traction, or carrying their ATV for "insurance". Then, there's the "good ole boys" in their 4WD's, who may be out for a "spin", and those who will help another motorist who thought he/she could drive on the ice.

Our problem is simply that there is NO plan to deal with snow or ice.

Andy, my blue and white 72 would spin out with a fog. Put about a dozen sand bags (filled) in the bed right above the axle. It will really help!!
