Re: Finally starting my Longhorn 4x4 conversion

Man you guys do some amazing work. I just went through your thread Nick and wow. I would love to have my 99 with a P7100. It has way too many electrical gremlins right now to worry about modding though. Still trying to get all the bugs worked out.

I'd love to buy one of those. They can be found up here in Ontario with gas power for a good deal . Much easier swap than trying to fit a 5.9 in a 02 suburban , maby????

Thanks for setting me straight 6L
I've always wanted an Excursion and my wife has too. They are always way over priced for a 7.3 around here. Well I found a great deal on a 00 XLT that is maroon and in really nice shape. It has tan leather with 3rd row seating. It's pretty loaded with the exception of a sun roof. It has 178k on it, but you can't tell it by how nice it is. I got it from a board member on here. He used the engine out of it for another truck. The reason it was pieced out was the front drive shaft locked up or broke, swung around and basically broke the tcase clear off the trans, broke the trans case, wacked the upper frame rail flange, and the air bags blew and broke the windshield. So it has no engine, trans, transfer case, or radiator. I had a new windshield put in it a while back, I've been collecting parts for it when I find them or have spare money. When I got it, it had mismatched tires on steel wheels. I got a nice set of Limited Excursion wheels and center caps off ebay. Luckily the guy I got it from already got the air bags and another module for it, so I just baught them from him. I got a 7.3 powerstroke intercooler for it, got a new diesel radiator, a new condensor, just ordered engine mounts and a tach kit from Auto World, I also got a new aero turbine muffler for it, and 4" exhaust. I'm taking the VE 24v out of the 76 and putting it in this. I'm using a 47RH that's rebuilt, a single billet torque converter, and a 241DHD with small out put shaft. This truck has 4:30 gears in it. For now I'm going to put 3:55's in the rear, and search for a D60 to put in the front. The big reason for the rush to get it going is because my wife's caddy is going down hill sooner than I'd hoped for. I'm not dumping money in that dang thing when I have this.

Re: Finally starting my Longhorn 4x4 conversion

Today I cut out the rear boxing plates, fit them, beveled them and the frame edges, cut the frame flange so it's straight now, welded the old suspension bolt holes shut from the inside, and tacked the boxing plates in. I'll finish welding it tomorrow and move to in front of the gooseneck tomorrow.

I've got a 96 Ford D60. Too bad they won't fit. The D50 will be plenty for this unit. I'm more than likely keeping it in there. There's nothing wrong with the operation other than gears. But, I have until winter to worry about that.

Re: Finally starting my Longhorn 4x4 conversion

And you were mad at me for hoarding them! i dont doubt the 50 will be fine. but who could resist a step up if the opportunity presents itself! and you know if you wait till winter you will get stuck trying to shim a pinion outside in the snow the night before you have to take the family to grandmas in a blizzard.

My truck was easy compared to some of our other projects.

Give it time, hopefully your VP44 lasts a while, thats when the big decision happens.

Keeps the frame from twisting. Since we tend to lean towards the milder builds on our DD's(500-750HP) it can create alot of twisting. I know in my experience a non boxed chevy frame twists really well. It can also help with weight transfer too.

So? It's so I can mash the go pedal with 15k behind me and not have the bed smash into the cab like these trucks did when they were new.

For strength during heavy towing, and the occasional sled pull. Peer pressure made me do it though..................
