I had same problem and tapped on it for what seemed like days to get it off.

All my drums still have the factory castings in them, so I can't adjust them down without the hole.

Question, is it OK to punch them out while they are still on the truck. I've done two so far (off the truck) and considering 32 years of road work, they just didn't pop out like I though they wood. I'm sorta afraid to beat on it like that with it still on the axle.

Thanks

2 common things hold the drums on: Rusted hub, pop the outer most edge of the drum with a semi large hammer. One good pop on the outside edge will cause a ripple effect which causes the center to pop outward.

Next thing would be the shoes have worn a ridge on the edge of the drum. As mentioned before you will need to back the adjuster off to slide the drum off.

If it doesnt move at all.. Pop it. If it moves out aboue 1/4 inch, back the adjusters off.

The Spring is there to help reduce drum vibrations/noise.

Another method (if the drum face inside is rusted to the hub face) is to smack the center hub with a hammer.

I was told the spring keeps vibration down, but don't know if I believe it.

This is correct. The vibrations make the harmonics noise...ringing basicly, like the rubbing of a wet finger on a wine glass.
I didn't really believe the board member who told me that, but with the springs missing off the GMC, I can hear the drums ringning as I go down the freeway. But it's ok becouse it distracts me from all the other annoying noises that i wish would just go away.

What noises.....like the voices inside your head???? I hope those voices can spell better...

I always wondered what those springs were for. Hmm....my parts truck doesn't have them, but my project does. I wonder how much of a difference they make.....
