*Noisy Electric Fuel Pump*

I am running a Walbro 255 inline fuel pump on my 2001 5.3 Vortec engine in my 49 pickup. The fuel tank is in the cab. The wife is complaining about the noise. What other electric fuel pump could I use to repace the Warbro that would be quieter?

Re: *Noisy Electric Fuel Pump*

were is it mounted ?

how is it mounted ?

these 2 points make a huge point in how quiet they are.

It's mounted on the inside of the frame at the back of the cab. I'd have to take another look but I believe it's bolted directly to the frame. Would mounting it on rubber help? Can it be wrapped?

Re: *Noisy Electric Fuel Pump*

Did you use a rubber isolator?

Does it get gravity feed from the tank easily?

Electric pumps do not like sucking fuel so much.

Do you get a full 12+ volts to the pump?

I did not install the pump so I guess I need to crawl back under the truck and see acactly how it is mounted. What would be the preferred location and what should it be mounted to and how?

As close to the tank as possible and isolated by rubber mounts. Here are a few examples:

https://www.summitracing.com/search/...style/isolator

It sounds like your location is OK. I think you would notice a world of difference with some rubber isolators.

Re: *Noisy Electric Fuel Pump*

Thanks for the info. I'm going to crawl under the truck this afternoon and take some pics and see just what I've got as far as where it's mounted, how it's mounted, and where it is in relation to the tank.

Re: *Noisy Electric Fuel Pump*

.
You're not alone...my pump is mounted way in the rear up against and at the bottom edge of the tank...very loud during priming. Can't hear it once the engine fires though.

It could use some extra rubber insulation though I'm sure!

Re: *Noisy Electric Fuel Pump*

Ok boys....here is what I have. The pump is wrapped but the screws from the brackets are screwed directly into the frame. When I first start the truck the wining is really loud but after 3 sec after it primes then the noise is not as bad. Laying beside the truck it doesn't sound that bad but in the cab its much loader. I think I'm getting the sound from the fuel pump and the electric fan as well. Whatya guys think?

Re: *Noisy Electric Fuel Pump*

better rubber mounting is needed other than the 2 cheep paper thin rubber lined clamps .

and does the fan always come on with key on ? if so you need a thermostat kit / relay combo to make that work less and not run until needed temp wise .

My fan comes on and stays on while the engine is running. Have you used one of the thermostat kit / relay combo? I'm not much on the electrical side on vehicles so can you give me a link to one of these kits? Thanks.

Re: *Noisy Electric Fuel Pump*

fan 100% the time = longer warm up times and more draw on the system it dont need . someone cheated to get it rolling .

there is lots of good kits for this with sensor in coolant system or probe in rad fin . then adjust to the on/off temp you want .

Thanks. I'll check into a thermostat kit. My engine run about 185 to 190 so would I need a kit in that range? As far as the fuel pump. When I get time I think I'll unbolt it from the frame and fire it up and see if there is any different in the sound.

Re: *Noisy Electric Fuel Pump*

.
Here's an example...

https://www.summitracing.com/tx/parts/prf-30112

There are less expensive ones with more reviews on Summit's site but this one looks to be pretty good. You'd still need a relay to make it right.

These things typically allow you to set a point at which the fan comes on then the fan will go back off when a 10 degree drop in temp is achieved. So if you set it to com on at 195 it would go back off at 185. At idle for example the fan would essentially be cycling off/on as needed but at speed it would stay off.

Hth,
