5.3 and m20 mating

i have read at length on this subject so i know its an easy to do pairing, i have a complete donor truck with a 5.3, a 10 spline m20, big block scattershield, sachs1050 flywheel.

my question is people recommend using an older bb 11" clutch i got my flywheel off of rock auto and searched clutches for the 6.0 flywheel(sachs1050) i ordered and they are 10 spline aswell, questions is will the stock 12" clutch work with the m20? id rather have the 12" than the 11" with the 11" i have to drill out holes on the pressure plate case and knock out pins on the flywheel, and the cost of the 12" is rather affordable. the 6.0 has the nv4500(gas) trans the nv4500(diesel) has a beefier input shaft at 1.25 i think, are the input shafts of the nv4500(gas) similar to the m20 so i can run the 12".

i havent been getting notifications via email so i may not respond right away but will try to check in regularly.

Re: 5.3 and m20 mating

I'm not acquainted with the M20 transmission. The only ones I know, are the sm465, and the nv4500.

The sm465 and the nv4500(gm, not dodge), have the exact same input shaft specs. They will fit the same clutch disks.

When mating a LS engine to a nv4500 or sm465, the nfw1050 flywheel is needed. This flywheel was OEM equipment when the LS 6.0 was paired with a nv4500.

Interestingly, the '05-ish clutch disk and pressure plate can be used, or the 80's sbc/bbc clutch disk and pressure plate can be used.

The old-school sbc/bbc clutch kit is a lot cheaper, but the friction surface doesn't match up as well to the '05 flywheel.

The '05 clutch kit is a perfect match to the '05 flywheel(obviously), but costs more.

You are right on ,0n the the flywheel.......but understand, use the big holes on the presser plate to mount it. ....then drill or ream the out other holes to , Basically 1 /64 inch(.015 --.o20 thou. The bolts that go in on that flywheel , are metric.....been there, played it longhorn

Re: 5.3 and m20 mating

I do not feel that I explaind all.....I was talking about the gen1 clutch. Mine is 11 inch. The 12 inch clutch, will fit on the same flywheel....just check your spline count on the input shaft, Use an ls6/7 bearing in the back of the crank. Some of the guys here, can give you the # on the bearing. best of fun,Longhorn
