Inline electric fuel pump to fill bowl of quadrajet?

I want to install an inline facet electric fuel pump manually switched to fill the bowl of my Q jet on my 86 silverdo as I am sick of cranking the crap out of it if it sits for more than a few days.I still want to run the mechanical pump and only use the electric pump to fill the float bowl for start up.
Has anyone done this on here and where did you place the electric pump?

Re: Inline electric fuel pump to fill bowl of quadrajet?

Yes, works well on an edelbrock also. I have 3 vehicles like this, 70 olds 442 with quadrajet, 67 k10 bbc with quadrajet, and a 42 pickup 350 with edelbrock. You can push thru the mechanicacl pump up near the front or toward the rear. I have a momentary push button that is only alive when ignition is on.

After sitting for a week, I usually prime for 20 or so seconds then set choke then start. I used solenoid type pumps as they are usually quieter..

Mechanical pump will pull thru the electric non running pump. Racing may be a diff story.

Re: Inline electric fuel pump to fill bowl of quadrajet?

I've had that setup on my Chevelle for 41 years, and my GTO for 54 years.

Holley Red pump at the tank, wired to a toggle switch on the dash.

Re: Inline electric fuel pump to fill bowl of quadrajet?

I've considered this myself. I have the same issue - if it sits for more than 24 hours or so, I need to crank it for 10-15 seconds. Seems to be better when I have a full gas tank.

I would look into other issues first. I think the electric fuel pump is a band aid. Here is a post by Lars. If you are not familiar with Lars, he is a Quadrajet guru, and has a bunch of posts on the Corvette forums, and some documents available for download.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...rain-back.html

Reading through this again, I notice a couple thing relevant to my truck. #1 is to remove the needle clip. This was not installed when I got the truck, but I installed it after the needle got stuck in the seat one day. #2 is the fuel pump. I replaced a bad fuel pump a few years ago. I used whatever the parts store had in stock. Given that the issue is not as bad when I have a full tank, I think the check valve is suspect. I wonder if a good AC Delco pump might solve the issue.

Re: Inline electric fuel pump to fill bowl of quadrajet?

I don't mind the cranking that much. It gives a chance for the oil pressure to come up. I notice when the oil pressure comes up the fuel has also gotten to the carb and it fires up. GM makes a nice inline fuel pump though.

Off subject but when my wife and I took the train from Winnipeg to Churchhill Manatoba we met a couple for 3 days from Cannaberra -- spelling may be wrong -- nice people.

Re: Inline electric fuel pump to fill bowl of quadrajet?

This is what is available locally which should do the job?https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HOLLEY-3...7/171837707653

But can get this facet style pump which might be better as I am told they make a noise you can hear when the bowl is full and the pump stops?https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RacePro-...t/301953458376

Re: Inline electric fuel pump to fill bowl of quadrajet?

I run Airtex with inlet and outlet size matching my fuel line size. About half the price. Try amazon. You can hear the solenoid pumps when engine is not running and it changes sound when bowl gets full.

Looks like your pumps are overkill to me for just a primer pump unless you race.

Airtex E8090 3/8" hose fittings

Airtex has one for 5/16 inch also.

Re: Inline electric fuel pump to fill bowl of quadrajet?

My concern is where is the fuel going. I have the same issue. And if you think about it, the float bowl actually holds quite a bit of fuel.

I putter around on the mechanical pump and then flip the electric pump on during periods of high demand.

It's siphoning back into the tank because the carb is higher than the tank. Install a one way check valve and it will stop doing that. Most electric pumps have a check valve built in. My daily sbc had the fuel pump lobe ate off the cam by a bad mechanical pump. I put on a Mr Gasket 12s pump and it has run just fine ever since.

Tried a check valve which did not help so now in process of installing electric fuel pump .

I take it the electric pump can flow fuel through the mechanical pump to prime the carb?

Does it matter where the electric pump is installed in the line?

can it be higher than the fuel tank?

Was thinking of mounting it on chassis rail next to the mechanical pump where the holes are already there and just re routing the main inlet line.?

Re: Inline electric fuel pump to fill bowl of quadrajet?

I put a fuel pump blockoff on my engine and mounted the electric pump under the radiator support.

I want to keep the mechanical and use the electric as a switched carb primer only.

Re: Inline electric fuel pump to fill bowl of quadrajet?

I've ordered two, one for the truck and one for the Rambler. I usually lift the hood on the car after it has been sitting for a week or two and with loosened wing nut give it a squirt through the air cleaner cover.

Re: Inline electric fuel pump to fill bowl of quadrajet?

Fitted the electric pump just above the mechanical pump and the truck can sit for a week now and starts instantly with the electric pump switched on for 10 seconds.Wish I had done this 2 starter motors ago.
