What would you do, or: Am I crazy for considering trading my '72 K10 Super?

Am I nuts? Wild hare or sensible thinking?

I've owned my '72 K10 Super for over four years. Put a ton of sweat and cash into it, and it's in the condition I want mechanically and cosmetically. Super solid mechanically, looks good but not so good I am afraid to drive it. I love this truck.

BUT... I also kind of want a faster and better-handling vehicle. And the K10 is somewhat redundant with my other vehicle, also a 4x4. I've always loved late '60s/early '70s muscle cars, but I can't afford those. And I can't afford or garage more than one "fun" vehicle, I'm lucky to have the ability to even do that!

So I thought: What about trading the K10 for a 67-72 2WD that is "sportier"? SWB, maybe slightly lowered, maybe LS-swapped or with a Tremec? Keeps me in the family, but is a completely different driving experience.

What would you do?

Trade my 4WD for a 2WD? I wouldn't... but that's me. I have the luxury of owning a 95 Z28 convertible for when I want to go around corners sideways. But if I could only keep one, the Blazer's staying.

I have had four 4x4's, three I rebuilt and one was a stock driver. I ended up selling all of them at some point in time. Two of them less than a month after I finished them. I guess 4x4's really aren't my thing. They are fun for a while but I get tired of them quickly. I think the main problem is that they are too easy to sell, and bring decent money in about any configuration. There is always someone asking if you want to sell it or, "how much you want for the truck?".

Anyway, if you don't think you will ever want another one like it, in that configuration and in that condition, trade or sell it and get what you think you want. I'm sure you will find plenty of willing souls to trade....

x2. I understand what you want & why, but it's your decision, not mine.
For my purposes, if it's not a 4x4.... why bother with it?

Re: What would you do, or: Am I crazy for considering trading my '72 K10 Super?

Not a crazy proposition at all. With the trade fodder you have you can step into something really good if you are picky and patient. One thing I have learned over decades of being in the hobby is i’ve owned a number of fantastic older cars that really didn’t do much for me to actually drive, use and enjoy. I have an old ‘65 C10 short box fleet side that I did a driver restore ration on some 30 years ago. It’s nothing special, just a clean old workhorse. I drive it on the dirt roads to my house without care, use it for hauling and just a fun driver. I’ve enjoyed it more than any other old vehicle I’ve ever had and still do. Different strokes for different folks, do what makes you smile.........

The 4x4 fan club (of which I am certainly a part) is strong on this thread!

Duly noted. Keep the opinions - and possible trade ideas - coming.

Re: What would you do, or: Am I crazy for considering trading my '72 K10 Super?

Don't be afraid to drive it...kinda wish mine was a 4x4, but then I'd want a 2WD too. SO, i get your delima.

Drive it! Pretend you just went out and bought a new one and you wouldn't store a new one away for sunny days...Drive the snot out of it. I don't mean run it ragged, just drive it every day like I would drive the new one that I won't afford.

Joey, you can already guess what I’d say! Keep that K10! I do have my Camaro SS though to scratch the itch I have for speed and g-force so I do get it. Either way I’m sure you’ll come away with something bad ass.

I had that itch for speed and road handling, too. A motorcycle can satisfy that far beyond any car can, and you can put it in the back of your truck. Don't need a full garage bay to store it

I don’t ask for others opinions , because you’ll get exactly that. Everyone has a difference taste and desire . Don’t let other determine you life or what you want in life. Other wise your destined to be a follower instead of your own person .

Do what make you comfortable . Some will call what they give as advice , we’ll there’s a Hugh difference between advice and opinions .

Not a bad idea, Tim. I have friends that have been trying to get me on motorcycles for years. Could happen, I guess...

I hear ya. Anyone that knows me knows I am just about as far from "follower" as possible... so sometimes I ask for opinions, just so I can consider other people's ideas about a situation. Those opinions might bring up something I hadn't thought of! Happens often. One potential pitfall of being a DIY leader type is not always seeing the entire picture, so I've learned to ask others to help me fill it in. Then I can make a better informed decision.

Re: What would you do, or: Am I crazy for considering trading my '72 K10 Super?

I actually just did what you are describing a few months ago. I had a 72 K5 blazer 4wd that was done...badass ride but I just never drove it and never used it as it was intended for. I traded a guy in Louisiana for a 70 c10 2wd and I am much happier. I drive the truck regularly and don't regret it for a second. Its personal opinion and comes down to what you want really!

Keep the truck and get a IROC Camaro. Great handling, easy to modify, cheap, and park it outside. And if you believe the hype it will be valuable someday.
