Re: My 42 Project

When we re looking for rear fenders we bought a complete 37 just for the rear steel fenders............. they did not fit!
The glass ones look great and just need a little support and they will work fine

Re: My 42 Project

Sweet very nice I like it a lot and the grill. I used to own a 41 1 1/2 ton with 2 spd rear...It was black fenders with green body...My son called it Big Green, he cried when I had to sell it....It's listed on stovebolt.com under Randy Cox they listed it as a 42 1 1/2 ton...

I actually have a 41-46 bed on its side in the back yard, I can snap a picture of the front panel angle in the morning.

Re: My 42 Project

ok I think I figured this out for you. I have done a couple 47-66 trucks so I know the bed strips for those have a "double hole" at the front of the strips, the very front one goes to the front bed panel and the one just a couple inches back gets the washer on the bottom and holds just the wood.

but looking at the 3 38-46 beds I have in the back yard, one has original wood, and I can see that the strips are like yours, only one hole at the very front. there are bolts through the WOOD only that go through to the front panel lip, as seen here:

you can see that the bolts for the front panel are in the center of the boards, not in the strips. I am pretty sure this is original wood in this one bed and the other beds dont have any wood but the front panel bolts are in the same spot.

I took another picture from the top side but this bed had a sheet of metal on top of the wood and there is a welded angle blocking your view of the bolts, but you can see the split in one board caused by the bolt.

Re: My 42 Project

Thanks Joedoh. These are great pics. My 53 had the double holes at the end. I almost got those but they are longer. My strips are 76 7/8. Based on your pics and not wanting bolts in the middle of the boards, I have decided to cut a 1 1/2 x4 oak board 48 long and install it under the front panel. I can counter sink some screws into the top thru the holes in the front panel. That will secure the front panel and I wont have to drill holes in my polished stainless. It doesn't need to be mounted to the frame because I have a cross member an inch away. Once I put the through bolts into the frame it want go anywhere.
I will post pics after I get the piece made.

This what you will see under the bed. Should also cover more of it with the frame covers

Re: My 42 Project

So for those who are following along and are getting confused about how many trucks are in this build, its one. I have another one I will build after this one. I was getting confused as I read thru my own pages. This green 42 is currently on the stock frame with a 55 rear axle and a stock front axle with disc brakes. The booster is under the floor. It has a small block v8 and a 700r4. Stock steering and 12 volt. The bed is stock half ton and eventually I will find some steel fenders for it. The 69 frame is under another cab just resting until I get around to that build, on a different thread. Still liking what Joedoh is doing with the s10 build. I may go that way when I am done with this one.

Re: My 42 Project

fiberglass in CA is where I can see it make sense, nice mild weather. I have had fiberglass parts here in kansas and in the winter it got cold enough that the fiberglass parts just shatter with even a small bump, no give at all.

I have 2.5 sets of steel fenders for my 3 cabs, need one more drivers side. one has a watermelon sized hole in it and one pair is 37-38, but I still count myself lucky.

looks really good rolling aorund!

Re: My 42 Project

I have been looking for about a year and have not won any on ebay or seen any good ones on craigslist. I still think the ford ones if you cut the square part at the running board it might work. You are doing great to have that many sets.
I heard that the 37-8 fenders are wider because of the narrower bed.

I think the 37-8 fenders have a style line around the wheel opening, but are the same width as 41-46, I believe its the 39-40 that are wider, you can usually spot them by the tiny little tailgates with the script chevrolet on them. I know where a 39-40 bed is with fenders but its on a different truck and cant be separated, well, by the owner anyway. I could buy the whole thing and split it I guess.

I have three cabs, three extra doors, four front clips, four beds (including what I think is a 1940 gmc steel floor bed), three sets of running boards but only 2.5 sets of fenders. I can go buy this truck with the 40 fenders, but really all I need is the fenders, not trying to be the illuminated collector.

funny story about your ford fender idea, I bought the single passenger fender I have from a guy who I saw in a craigslist ad that had a bunch of fenders hanging from the rafters, I asked if he had any 41-46 and he said "dunno, come look". this is the complete 41 he had, it was actually an older (40?) cab with the 46 front clip and a 46 long bed on a 50 chassis. you can see some of the fenders hanging that I spotted in the ad

I went and looked and I thought I found a pair but the drivers side had a spare dimple in it and on closer inspection was a 40 ford, so it fooled me. I took a picture of the running board attaching area because I had no idea what it was till I got home and looked up what it was.

I bet you are right, only the truly cognoscenti would spot it.

Re: My 42 Project

I have noticed that when the engine is running it smells a little rich. I checked the carb and did not realize I had put a 1407 Edelbrock which is a 750 cfm. Way too much for a 305. So did a little research and found out that the holley 1850 600 cfm car has vacuum secondary's so it will only use the fuel it needs. I also found that my carb gasket was leaking air so that made it hard starting. It sure starts nice now. So much smoother idle too. I also noticed that it is not cooling well enough so I think I will look for an auxiliary fan.
