What kind of jack and spare set-up do you carry?

I didn't have the original for my 68 so I bought a fairly new scissor jack from the junkyard and mounted it on a short piece of 4 X 4. Then I took the spare tire cable reel (don’t know the actual name of it is but it’s a box with a cable that winds down and up with a piece of metal that fits through the middle hole of the spare rim) off a 2000 something Chevy truck and mounted it under my bed. Instead of carrying the long pole that extends through a hole by the rear license plate I took out the PO’s air shock filler and inserted the rod through the hole and into the reel (welded it to the cable box) and then supported the rod halfway with a bearing support. On the end of the rod by my license plate I welded a lug nut the same size my truck uses. I have a flip-out lug wrench that fits my rims and this lug nut so all I have to do is take out the wrench, flip out the head to the right angle and lower my spare down like on modern trucks. I am not a purist with my 68 like I am my 66. This set-up is MUCH easier for me.

Anyway, what does everybody else do? Carry bottle-jacks, original jacks or what?

Re: What kind of jack and spare set-up do you carry?

After years of no jack in the truck, I recently bought a 5-ton bottle jack. An old 4-way rides behind the seat, and my last original split rim is in the usual spot under the bed -- with a worn-out highway tire which I believe is original.

Some day I'll get a newer spare, just in case I ever actually need to use it...

I keep a bottle of Jack Daniels under the seat(that's why it has a square bottle,it won't roll out) after a flat I will sit on the tailgate and drink that till the wife picks me up.

Re: What kind of jack and spare set-up do you carry?

No spare in mine, however for long trips to some shows I carry a tote in the bed fo the truck that carrys all of my detailing stuff, some extra airline, a spare bag, a tool kit, and a full size jack. No sissor or bottle jack here, but the same full size jack I use in my garage. I can fix most issues that I could have with what I have in that tote, and for a flat or anything major I have roadside assistance through my insurance. Also I usually drive to further off shows with several other guys, so theres always help.

Wow - I guess times and tires and roads have changed. In my day (and it wasn't that long ago) you wouldn't think of not having a spare.

I have a generic bottle jack and a 4 way under the seat. I've had to use it. Spare's mounted on the inside wall of the bed. It's a 90 step bed on a 72 cab so I didn't hurt anything!

I keep a spare under the bed & a floor jack behind the passenger seat in my 1/2 ton & in the across-the-bed tool box in my 3/4 ton.. I've had flat tires with these trucks before & couldn't fit the original jack under it.

About cell phones and AAA cards... if you're out in the woods around here, AAA couldn't find you even if you could get cell coverage. Best be prepared to take care of yourself.

Re: What kind of jack and spare set-up do you carry?

I have a complete Jack set (bag and all) that was never used setting in my office (thanks to fine69's lead). Eventually it will find its way into the Circuit Rider.

Re: What kind of jack and spare set-up do you carry?

Ges55 has it right .I keep a spare under the bed & a floor jack behind the passenger seat in my 1/2 ton & in the across-the-bed tool box in my 3/4 ton.. I've had flat tires with these trucks before & couldn't fit the original jack under it.

Mine is in the bed in my 1965 3/4 ton but i have a bed liner that conceals it from view

Here is the one safety tip of the day Why did VW car's Keep the spare in the front of the car some say they had enough room under the rear seat Its was the Air bag back in them days well when tho we have trailer hitches that are made better now with receivers did you know a spare tire will help you in a rear end Hit i've been hit 3 time by 3 different drunk drivers 1 at 35 2 45 3 78 mph and i still have the truck and drive it today tore up the bumper. But waled away with minor back problems.

I hear so often from most of you that you think that having the gas tank in the truck is so bad I rather it be there where it it protected instead of one on the side rail or in the back now most of them plastic tanks do take a hit but a metal tank rip right open pouring fuel all over the place I'm all about safety I by tires that get me over 200,000 miles I run a spare cus its just one of them things that i know its back there

Re: What kind of jack and spare set-up do you carry?

I was wondering, do they make a space saver spare that fits these trucks? Seems it would be easier to conceil under the bed.

Re: What kind of jack and spare set-up do you carry?

Regarding the VW statement...actually, the spare tire up front was the source for air pressure to make the windshield washers work. One thing we used to have to do for VW driver's, when I worked for an ESSO station, was check the air pressure in the spare tire, too. In theory, it wasn't supposed to get below a point that would keep if from being usable if you had a flat, but no guarantees.

As for a spare and a jack....I have 'em in my '96, but never carried 'em in my '69.

As to the compact spare question: I sent my '96 to CA when the youngest was home on leave. I put a Caprice compact spare in it, because he had two different size tires on it. The spare would take care of the rear, but the wheel wouldn't clear the lower control arm on the DJM-lowered vehicle.
