Re: The Rules

I have a spare email account just for those occasions. I don't even remember the password.

O think Azone is the worst. Enter your vehicle then have to tell it that you want parts that actually fit said vehicle.

Re: The Rules

I kept a scorecard for parts and the vehicles they were on in the past. I put a 305 Chevy with a 700 trans in a '72 Le Mans. Now, go ask for headers for that combination and watch the poor counterman scratch his head when you tell him that it has a 305 in it. I didn't like that when I worked a parts counter, so I don't do it to them. I tell them it's a '72 Malibu with a 350. Easy-peasy. They don't need to know the reality, unless they are real car guys and saw you pull in with a Poncho and were asking for Chevy parts. Of course, the Chevy COULD be laid out on the operating table at home.

I used to get that with my Model A.

I would ask for a part for a 350 Chevy and they would ask me what car it was for so they could look it up.

Me: "It's for a 1931 Ford"

Them:

I also dislike it when they ask for your phone number when you buy something. I used to say no. But now I just smile and give them my ex wife's number.

Re: The Rules

Back in the 1980s, during a period of actually living in town, I went into a random parts store on the way to work and asked for a length of defroster hose. Some young "smart" lady (they were just starting to hire women in parts stores about then) told me there was "no such thing" and that they were all molded plastic. Well, no - not on a 1965 Chevy pickup; it looks sort of like vacuum cleaner hose. I think I stomped out and finally found some at another store.

Another time a few years before that I had done a valve job on my 305 V-6 and wanted to replace the little connecting hose between the water pump housing and intake manifold while I had it apart. So I went into the parts store right across from the grocery store (not where I usually went) and asked for a few inches of 2" radiator hose. Again, this "smart" young lady demanded the make/model/year and said there was no such thing and that I was "jury rigging"

How did this thread degenerate into digging on women parts help? One of the best parts people on the planet I know is a gal. She could run circles around most lazy azz male counter people. Holly is the best. She'll ask "Do you have the pulley puller for that water pump installation?", things the parts buyer hadn't thought about. She makes sure when you leave that store you have what you need to get it done. I have never had a female counter person wait on me who was not on the ball, they seem to try harder from what I've seen

Re: The Rules

I agree Tim. The two best counter people I have encountered at the front counter were women and both rolled on to take a manager position at local Napa locations owned by the same group. They both had excellent comprehension skills which made them light years ahead of most of the guys that seemed to have the sole purpose of telling me why I am wrong and son't need what I am asking for. Most of the older guys that were used to the big book rack have since moved on and it seems the kids have no interest in looking thru them anymore. If it is not listed on the computer it does not exist.

Re: The Rules

So the counties that didn't loosen up a couple weekends ago began the same last night. Outside dining only, reservations only. The customer I finished a job for yesterday is single, tried to reserve a table. No reservations for single parties. You have to gather a group to social distance

Re: The Rules

This whole thing is ridiculous. Craziness all around. They are pushing social distancing yet a restaurant can turn away a single customer to seat a party or group instead. Clearly they are just accommodating groups for the larger sales per table. I understand that but many things are different these days. I'm looking forward to the day we can dine in some of the places we have done so for so many years but at the same time I am apprehensive too.
Is this the new normal in the 20's?

Apparently the virus does not affect Large retail, riots & protests Just indoor small business and normal social gatherings. Funny how it was trained to be so selective.

Maybe it's getting better around here. Was in the grocery store the other day and the floor tape (arrows in the aisles & 6' marks at the checkstands) was all gone.

Oh, these days there is pretty much equal opportunity incompetence

You really want to find the old grizzled guy or the fat lady behind the counter because they know their stuff

I miss the old parts store guys from when I was younger. I learned a lot from some of them.

My dad was one of those old school guys.He had a parts store in a really bad neighborhood. The guy at the liquor store and the guy at gas station next to him were both shot to death. It was a rough place and my old man worked 7 days a week .
I remember he had a shotgun right under the cash register. My father was a tough guy. But he was the greatest dad that I could have ever asked for. I lost him too soon.

Re: The Rules

Well, I was allowed into the ACE Hardware yesterday. It's good to know the smaller local stores have become as safe as the big box stores . I don't know why they couldn't have had a person monitoring how many go in by how many go out the way the huge big box tax contributors, I mean stores, have been allowed to operate all along.

Re: The Rules

I was talking with the owner of the Ace in town about the confusing nature of all the orders and the changes. It turns out they were curbside-only for just a week. So not being able to go in that one time caused me to be going elsewhere for a few weeks. I buy food in the same shopping center. Drove right by. I still saw all the curbside signs up. They offered that "option" the whole time. They closed a day or two to clean and prep when the essential-only stuff started.

I'm getting tired of the same few masks. Where can a guy get a mask with some style?

My uncle, ten days younger than me, bought this Model A in LA in 1968 and brought it back to Arkansas in 69. It sat here in his brothers shop until a couple years a ago and he decided he was going to stay in California. It is in Corona now, and he is working on it. He took it for it's first drive in 40 years last week.

Re: The Rules

Watch who you rub elbows with. You are rubbing elbows and not shaking hands now, right? They also say you should cough into your elbow. So I am confused. Let's make a standard here, cough in one and shake with the other. Or how about just start bumping butts? Then you could cough into hands, elbow, or even a handkerchief! Just don't stuff it in your back pocket. Maybe just be socially distant and give a quick hand up or just a glance with a nod. What's with all this human contact anyway? "I see ya" should be considered a gracious greeting
