Got a surprise phone call

Last Sunday night I was watching TV in my bedroom and my cell phone rang, the number was from Riverside County and I live in Orange County. It was past 9 PM but I answered it. To my surprise it was a Riverside Sheriff's Deputy calling to ask if I had reported my motorcycle stolen. I said yes and he asked me to describe the bike. It is a Honda XR650 that I have had as a fun bike to commute on and ride around. He told me I could come pick it up. So I headed out in my truck and picked it up. It was about a 75 minute drive, luckily my friend lives less than a mile from where they pulled the guy over that had the bike in his truck. So my friend grabbed the bike for me.

So now here is the kicker, my motorcycle was stolen in 2017.

Re: GOt a surprise phone call

Wow -- amazing to get it back at all, especially after that much time. Even more amazing that it's all in one piece. Congrats!

Any info as to who took it, or what led to it being found? Props to the cops, most of us could never deal with the things they do.

The guy was driving his truck and he had no plates on the truck. So he was pulled over for no plate. So the bike was in the bed of the truck and also had no plate, so the cop ran both VIN numbers. The driver had 5 outstanding warrants and is now being charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

Re: Got a surprise phone call

That's great luck! I'm surprised you weren't notified it was recovered back when it was recovered. Or did they just recently pull the guy over with the bike in the truck with no tags? I know they'll hang on to stolen good for evidence and release it to the rightful owner once processed of after trial. I've had stolen good recovered and I was notified of their recovery once identified as mine.

The police pulled him over on Sunday, May24, 2020 and that is when they "found" the stolen bike. They had me come pick it up at the place he was pulled over.

I still own it. I only had liability on the bike.

Re: Got a surprise phone call

What a winner? So he had the bike a few years then decides he'll haul it down the road in a truck with no plates. He probably had just sold it after being stashed and was taking it to the buyer.

Nice you got it back. Make him pay rent and mileage from the money he gets from making license plates.

That's great you got your bike back and they called you to pick it up instead of impounding it and letting it Accumulate fees.

Glad news to hear for you. It has been a year since our 1990 GMC was stolen. Maybe we'll get a call like that someday.

Nice bike! Great to see that you got her back.

Makes one wonder if the truck was boosted as well. Looks to be pretty clean too!

Ah, got it. Was thinking that was a pretty big coincidence.
