Well I knew the hammer had to drop. Mom and Dad's 50th wedding anniversary went off saturday without a hitch. Returning to work after a long weekend went south. So today I decided to go to work in the garage. Mounting the tires to the rearend. The pinion shaft is off center by 2.5".So now I need to cut the cradle and remove 2.5" and get an axle cut.

Why would you need to cut the cradle and get an axles made? It will work off set like that. I have been running a dana 44 in my 59 that is offset to the passengerside for years with not a bit of trouble. The u-joints will take care of it. Just make sure your driveshaft has enough room. Not sure what you already have set up on the frame. There are a lot of vehicles from the factory that are set up with the tranny output shaft centered in the csr and the rear off set one way or the other. Here's mine

I think your plan to shrink the cradle is a good one. I faced this problem when we restomodded a 66 GTO. The 12 bolt was over 1/2 inch from center. I offset the engine/tranny by that amount. While I know it would have worked, I didn't want to introduce additional angles for the driveshaft to deal with (side to side and up and down). I believe in your case, the 2.5 pinion offset would result in a side to side driveline angle that would exceed 4 degrees, and would probably give you some vibration at speed. On a positive note, if you take 2.5 inches out of the cradle as proposed, it will give you additional fender lip/tire clearance. Finally, wouldn't you be able to make a passenger shaft work on the driver's side if they are now both the same? I love your build and the paint colors you like are very close to ones my wife wants on her 58 corvette that we are currently restomodding. Keep the pictures coming.

What Buggy says is true. I wouldn't mess with the rear cradle and axle. Many of the old mopars were built with an offset. If you look under the hood the engines were offset to match. I know 2.5" seems like a lot, but I would have a serious look at dealing with it the way it is. Whatever way you go, Good Luck with your build.

I looks like the ends on your bumper are straight,? all 58's have an upward curve on the ends.

You guys are correct If the camaro and corvette used u-joints anymore. they use driveshaft couplers that look like this. They pretty much want it at zero. And it will give me better rim selection if I want to go 20x10 rims later on, If I add a turbo.

you are looking to carefully. It is a picture of another truck that I had the colors change by a couple of good guys in the photoshop section of this forum. This picture is at an angle, but you can still see it goes passed the wheel area on the side, And i have not seen one used on the back. The side needs to be cut back about an 1.75".

A good CNC operator could machine an adapter that would bolt to the rear and accepts the U joint of your choice. Not sure how many machine shops can do heat treating. Just a thought. Could make building a new driveshaft easier down the road.
Offsets are normal. I centered my C4 rear but offset the engine right 1.75 inches to clear the steering shaft.

Well I got alot of little thing buttoned up on the front end. I still have the c-notches for the rack and to double up the upper shock mounts. Hopefully I can get to that during the week. I would like to do the dash nexts weekend (3 days). My goal is to have it running for El Segundo car show Aug. 25, 2012.

You are really making a lot of progress. I really like the 58 bumper. The stock one just looks like GM grabbed something off the shelf and threw it on.

Your build is looking great. Good luck with the dash install. I recently put a 59 dash in my 1950 truck. It took me longer than 3 days but it wasn't difficult. Lots of trimming and fitting. I also got a lot of inspiration from Chuckdriver's build thread. Vintage air makes a set of A/C controls that will fit in the original AC/heat control space. You may want to check it out. Keep the pictures comming.
