Re: Dumbest thing you have done to your truck

Well it wasn't my truck but my 65 mustang. Rebuilt the motor and sent the crank out. Didn't know there was a pilot bushing in the back of the crank. Cost me 2 transmissions. Couldn't figure out why it burned up input shafts in about 100 miles. That 1.00 part back then cast me about 300.00 and when you are 16 that hurts.

Re: Dumbest thing you have done to your truck

Oh my...

Cut big holes in the floor planning on fixing the cab and realizing it was too much work (roof cowl floors etc rusted out).

Pulling the NICE 67- 68 trim off

Spending as much as I did on my motor

Actually 'totaling' it was one of the better things (panhard bar, carrier bearing and a bedside and some welding on the trailing arms was all it needed..)

Re: Dumbest thing you have done to your truck

Can't say I've done dumb things to my truck but dumb things "with" my truck - I could fill a few paragraphs. Most of which included either spinning tires in conspicuous places or way too high speeds and were mostly, though not entirely, back in my college days.

Re: Dumbest thing you have done to your truck

Deciding to fix the body before I got it running. My truck was running and driving a week before I picked it up, I bought it minus engine and trans. I figures I would never fix the body if I got it running, now years later it is half fixed (and I am only about half satsfied with the repairs) and needs so much more from sitting. So I am planning to throw an engine and trans in and finish the cab work and put it back together.

Re: Dumbest thing you have done to your truck

Two things come to mind:

1. painting the truck before I got the chassis work (cab miunts etc.) fixed.
2. dropping a chisel fragment down into the motor when replacing the intake manifold and thus requiring me to buy a new motor while I rebuild the old one...

Doing a truck built around an original 68 low mile engine and thinking it would hold up after the truck was done and it was being used as a driver.

Re: Dumbest thing you have done to your truck

Oh man I wish I had pics...to frame the story I was 15. I just have to have some decent speakers, and for some reason was completely against putting them in the doors...they didn't have speaker pods for the kick panels back then and Dad and I weren't really that imaginative yet. Not messing with these trucks before, we had no clue that there is structure behind the kick panels. We cut holes with all the wrong tools (PITA) for 6.5" speakers right in the kick panels and through half of the cowl structure behind. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID. Besides the speakers getting wet and rusting in a year, the air was always wrong. I eventually had that all fixed up right but man how dumb was I?

Re: Dumbest thing you have done to your truck

Im in the wrong section, but I bought an '82 C-10 shortbed, 250 I6 4speed manual w/OD then took it to bare frame and that's all I have left. It was a nice running, driving truck but then I had a dumb idea to transfer the body and running gear to a different frame once the new frame was all painted/lowered. None of which happened. I got the new frame painted but that's as far as it went. I ended up destroying a perfectly good, running/driving, almost rust free 82. But hey, I never claimed to be smart. I will know better if/when there is a next time.

For me its when I decided to pull the badges off of my truck even though the badges were near perfect and just in need of some elbow grease but I have decided to put the badges back on as soon as I find a second Custom/10 badge and 2 400 badges even though I'm running a small block 400

I once had to replace a wheel bearing on the side of the road...cranked down on the replacement with all my strength, drove a 100' or until it seized. I've learned a thousand lessons the hard way since then...I blame my absent father!

Re: Dumbest thing you have done to your truck

The biggest (dumb thing), I fell in LOVE with the old truck.....its been a love /hate relationship for 25yrs now! I took a solid west coast truck in for a "freshenup", & things sort of snowballed from there There has not been a ricer (with NOS), a 5.0 stang, or a V8 s-dime that has ever smoked that old 4200 lb Bioch on the street.....she will cruise 105 mph, @ 3150 in OD all day long, or run damn next to 140 hammer down on the open road(a little spooky tho). crazyL

Re: Dumbest thing you have done to your truck

Dumbest thing I did with my truck:

Well I was on my way home from work, just a couple of blocks from my house, I pulled up to a red light "POLE POSITION". A Orange a black R/T Charger (New junk not old classic) pulled up behind me, well the light turned green and I took off. I was not really trying to race him just wanted to leave him way behind me. At 60, I got off the gas and the Charger pulled up right behind me with LIGHT FLASHING, yup its a cop S**t! He comes up to my window and asked me what the hell was I doing, (I have always been good at talking my way out of trouble, but this was going to be hard) I told him I was sorry and that I was just being dumb, he smiled and asked if I was surprised when he hit the lights, I laughed, yes I was. The officer went back to his vehicle w/all my papers, when he returned, the first thing out of his mouth was "this is a bad-ass truck" and that he was going to let me off with a warning since the roads were not that busy. I thanked him and drove really slow the rest of the way home. Oh yeah, the speed limit of the road was only 35.
