I need advice - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi,
I am new to this board, and could use some help from those with experience.
I have stumbled across a 71 Jimmy in a farmers field. He is willing to sell it, and said to make an offer.
It doesn't really have any options, but it is pretty much all there. It has a '68 327 in it but the owner has the original 307.

I will attach some pictures, and any advice is very much appreciated!

Welcome to the board and whats the price? Jimmy's tend to run cheaper than blazer's, but don't tell jimmy owners that

Edit: missed "make an offer" part. Need tons more info. Rust, running, interior, body,etc. If its rusted and not running , make an offer of $300-$400. Again, a consideration is that if you are planning to put money and time into it, Blazers have a better return on investment traditionally.

If you don't plan on selling or spending $$$ on it, then shoot the the " let me do you a favor and take this off your hands for $300"

Check for rust in the windshield frame, the floorboards, rocker panels, rocker boxes basically every where.

You do not need to LOOK to see if it has rust.......IT WILL HAVE RUST PROBLEMS ref: last picture behind the pass. door. If the rust is visible at that spot, you can plan on needing to replace EVERYTHING underneath the floors and behind the door sills. If you do the work yourself, call it $2-3K USD incl. cost of mig welder and cutting tools to do it. If you pay someone else, call it $5-8K without getting it painted yet.

The cheapest thing that you will ever do to this vehicle is buy it. It only gets more $$$ from there. Give him $500 for the Jimmy and BOTH engines, then budget $8,000 USD and 2 years to restore it. Don't be suprised if it costs you more and takes you 5 times longer than that.

At this age/condition, there is NO difference in the value of a Jimmy vs. Blazer.

I would agree, but the $$$ you put into it add more to a blazer than a jimmy. Anyone else support this? I can assure you that a restored blazer brings much more than a restored jimmy. I'm not bagging on jimmy's, for us truck lovers, its the look that counts and both are the same. If you ever want to sell though....

So on the pics:
As other's have posted, you need to crawl under, over, under carpet, seats, firewall(looks ok though), windshield frame, rear floor(underneath and top), rockers, etc.
IF you could get this for $500 or less, then go for it AND set a limit to the amount you will spend on it. Since return on investment is less for the jimmy, plan on spending 3-4k to bring it up to drivable, clean state(not restored).
IF you are looking for something to restore, my recommendation would be to get Blazer(from a southwest state)

Man I have a Blazer and not a Jimmy but I didnt know you guys ragged on the Jimmys so much. I figured since there were less of the Jimmys they may be worth more but I guess not. Zr9, if you want, buy it and convert the front end to a chevy.

i'm not raggin on the jimmy. I've seen alot of killer jimmy's

. OP asked for advise so thought he should get it all up front. Blazers sell for more than jimmy's though

kinda like camaro's sell for more than firebirds.

If the truck is from around Calgary you will be spending alot of time and money replacing rusted out body and floor but the end result will be worth it. I rescued my pickup from a field and the dollars everyone is quoting you are very accurate. I wanted a blazer right now so I bought one from the US that was ready to drive. Try and get it for as cheap as possible. If you get it for around $500 and you are not able to find the time and energy to work on it I am sure someone here will take it off your hands for what you paid.
If you are not familiar with buying parts for these years there are a few guys in Calgary here that can help you with info.
Let me know what happens as I might be interested if you don't want it.

Yes, Jakeslim I guess you are right. I just havent bought or sold many of them so I didnt realize one sold for more than the other. The pic he has doesnt look too bad though. I wish he had some pics from the sides to better look at rust in rockers or doors. I think I have the most rustfree 2wd Blazer on the board. The only rust repair performed was quarter sized holes in the floor pans on the left and right front areas. I should have just patched them but put in whole patch panels. Whe I had floor sections out I could look at inside of rocker boxes and they were perfect. Not even a speck of rust in doors, fenders, tailgate, nowhere. I got so lucky for my first one.

I talked to the owner again today.
He is 83 years old and his memory is not so great. Anyway, he has another truck in the shed beside the Jimmy, he thinks it's a Blazer, but isn't sure if it's a 69 or 70.
I will be back in Milk River next wednesday and take some pics of the other one.
Hopefully, I can build one decent one out of the 2 trucks. He had some old pictures he showed me in a photo album of his kids, but they did not really show the truck too well.

69 or 70 blazer would be great. If it's in the shed even better! Maybe its had some shelter. Same story though with the rust...make sure you look good and estimate whether you can handle the body needs. Getting both as a package would be

Well.

I stopped by to see the older gentleman with the Jimmy and Blazer today.
His wife had dug out the original bill of sale for the one I have yet to see, along with some better pictures.
Turns out that it is a 1970 K5/CST with a few options. Tilt/Tach/A/C/G80/Tinted windows, etc.
This truck is black with a white( parchment) interior.
It was apparently in a fairly serious pass front accident so I have yet to see if it worth restoring.
Anyway, I bought them both, and should have them home in a couple of weeks.

Making one good one out of two is great fun that I am in the middle of. These vehicles are fun to restore and when done make excellent vehicles for on or off road. Post more pictures and we will coach you along the way. Beware of guys trying to buy the "rare stuff" to help you out as the temptation is often too much. The tilt, tach, buckets, console, am/fm radio, rear seat floor brackets and any tow hooks are very collectable so keep those for you finish project. The doors are not unique but are just truck doors cut down at the factory. Most of the front end is common to trucks as is the drive train. Good luck----Huck

Well no pics of the CST truck yet. I was close today, but got tied up at the gas plant until after 6:00 pm.

Anyway, I have bought both of them and will trailer them home sometime this month.

Then I will certainly take pics of everything.

Hmmm, and I thought starting up my own company would give me more free time...
