1979 C10 Build

Well guys im back at at it again. Ha!
This will be a build thread mostly, but i may seek advice on here too.
Let me start off from the begining.
I bought a 1979 C10 in october. was told 350 small block, mother thumpr cam, 305 heads, turbo 400 w/ cheetah shift kit, and 4.11 or 4.56 rear gears.

Well it had brand new edlebrock carb and performer intake, long tube headers, but was way advance on ignigtion timing. decided to hunt for probelms, led to us pulling intake manifold and finding a bent push rod, two worn lifters (one of which was almost worn enough to use as a shot glass) and a mild edlebrock cam with one lobe completely gone.
Heads were a 305 light port and bigger valves. block was a 350 with 3 cracks inside oil galley and a 9 inch crack on outside of block hidden by head, more than likely from block freezing.

Although it is a turbo 400 with shift kit.

Well we pulled engine obviously and lucky for me my bro had a nearly fresh 305 sbc with 400 crank and full stoker clearance'd rotating assembly and a lightly used 268xe comp cam.

So engine is built this weekend we are installing in truck.
383 stoker bored .40... i think that makes it 388?
aluminum heads, 2.05 intake/1.60 exhaust valves
1.6 roller rockers with 268xe comp cam (adv. lift is 480 i think and actual is 500+? in that range)
speed pro pistons. block was zero decked so we had to run double head gaskets to get compression down from near 11:1 to 10:1 so i can still run pump gas
BM truck ratchet shifter
2.5" exhaust with super 44's flowmaster

day of purchase

shifter

engine coming out

new heads

So tomorrow im going to my brothers shop,
need to install trans mount got some gauges and exhaust components.
Then sunday we will both be there to finish bolting up trans to engine, finish engine install like passenger header, front accessories, and such. then fire it up break it in and tune it. And she will be done......for now

Decided on the project name "Black Betty" as it is one of my fave songs and i am getting it paint flat black, no chrome and a few red accents.

Re: 1979 C10 Build

ok so i want to do a seat swap.
I liked my seats in my 05 GMC. 2 captains chairs that the center folds up in to a 3rd seat.
Any suggestions on something like that?
I want to go to junkyard and pull some seats

Re: 1979 C10 Build

Sorry havent updated been busy working on the truck.
About to head to dyno shop to see what she puts down. ill post vids and copies of printouts.

BUT more importantly I havent had blinkers or brake lights. Have head lights and running lights.
I had the high beam switch on the floor. (well the truck came with it light that.) But it was lose and the headlights would always turn off while drive, SCARY! So i just unplugged the switch and wired them all together, yes highbeams are on all the time, im planning on adding a seperate switch for highbeams. but i did that and took off the column shift and installed B&M on floor, well after one of those two things the blinkers stopped working. and break lights.... any ideas?

Re: 1979 C10 Build

well dyno #'s where a little depressing.
Made almost 300rwhp SAE at 5200. Brother thinks something off. Because the cam we are using should make power a lot higher in rpm band. Ill post everything soon

Well basic rule of thumb is 1HP per cubic inch on a BUILT motor. This was an economy build, $2,000 for engine machining, parts, block, heads, pistons, rods, everything. And its dyno numbers. Its just to give me an idea of what im making. So when i switch to a larger header and switch to my 3" exhaust with x pipe i can see my gains. ALSO Its 300HP SAE corrected at tires. Thats about 360hp at the crank.

He showed me uncorrected numbers and it was 330hp and 360tq at tires. so that would be almost 400hp crank. But again those werent SAE numbers.

Plus im making 333 ft/lbs of torque at 2300 rpm (rear wheels, thats almost 400 at crank)! with 4.33 rear gears.
AND my torque curve, well its a straight line almost lol. on my second run max torque was 333tq at 2300 rpm and at 5200 rpm it was 297tq so very flat.
