Here is what a Dirty Lifter sounds like (knock tick noise)

It has been quite a while but I figured I would create this post for future people who are searching the forum trying to diagnose a similar problem. First of all here is a thread that has all of the symptoms listed:

And here is a video of what the ticking / knocking noise sounds like:

I attempted many things to try and diagnose the issue but nothing seemed to work. A buddy of mine told me that it sounded like a dirty lifter to him and to change the oil and put a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in the place of one of the quarts of oil. Yup, after a few trips around the block it worked. My truck is running just fine and I have a little nest egg saved up for the rebuild that I am not going to have to use. I hope this helps someone in the future.

Re: Here is what a Dirty Lifter sounds like (knock tick noise)

I'm suffering through this same situation right now. The ticking on my engine lasts for a few minutes after a cold start, then goes away until the engine cools down again. MMO didn't do much to help, I have a can of Seafoam I'm going to use as a last resort before pulling the intake manifold off to change the lifters.

Here is a thread I created with a link to a video where you can hear the same ticking/knocking noise.

Try adding a quart of ATF (trans fluid) it's mostly detergent and after a day or two (maybe more, depending on how varnished they are) the noise should be gone, change your oil and motor on!

You know what they call that? "Way easier than talking the passenger valve cover off a big block AC truck", that's what!

Re: Here is what a Dirty Lifter sounds like (knock tick noise)

well shoot let me join the party as I got a similar ticking noise on my '74 350 manual, but what blows my mind is that I had it before I put brand new cam, lifter, and pushrods in, I even swapped the cylinder heads for a set of Vortec Ones and I still got a tickin' sound, it is driving me crazy, engine has less than 250 miles on it after Top End swap (bottom end was left alone) running 20W-50 STP mineral oil with Lucas zinc additive for the flat tapped cam, oil was changed after break in

almost not existant at 750 RPM when it idles than it becomes more pronounced above 1000 RPM

valves adjusted after break in and about 100 miles on it

any suggestions
