Re: *Retirement Approching*

I've been trying to retire from the VFD for four years now. I did retire and am drawing a little state pension but the chief wants me to stay on as "reserve" for my experience. I don't respond much anymore but I did go out with the big tender a few weeks ago.

I just had all new seamless gutters installed and I need to paint all the wood trip under the gutters that goes around the house. We have an area where we feed the birds and it need to be torn down, redesigned , and rebuilt. I also need to paint the old shed where I keep the lawnmower and all the yard tools. Just put up a new 10X12 shed so it makes the old one look bad.

Re: *Retirement Approching*

Well....the day has finally come. This is my last day at work. I'm setting here clearing out my desk and giving the new guy my last thoughts before he takes over my position by himself tomorrow. Went down to the jewelry store a couple days ago and picked up my retirement gift. $500 Seiko watch. If they are a given then I'm a taken.

Congrats Zippi on your retirement! I retired in 2009 and never looked back. Nice retirement gift by the way, I bought a Seiko watch at the PX in Viet Nam in 67 and still have it today.

Thanks man. I did about the same. I bought a Bulova watch in the Philippines in 1972 and still have it but it no longer works. I also bought a Zippo lighter I had engraved.

Congratulations. You'll love retirement. No more idiotic meetings or whining employees. It's like heaven.

Now I only have to listen to my wife....But I have headphones.

I have several Zippo lighters but have never had good luck getting them to work properly. It's probably just me.

Nice watch. My company didn't give anything but directions to the door.

Congratulations! Nice watch. All I got was a laser etched tchotchke suitable for leaving in its box, in a drawer somewhere.

Re: *Retirement Approching*

It's been three years for me and don't regret leaving the company I worked for over 36 years. It was a good company and like any it had it's ups and down. I was a service tech for 10 years and a domestic and international sales manager for 26 years. I saw the world on the companies nickel. Met and worked with many amazing people from around the world.
Having said that I'm so happy to be home. My wife retired about the same time. We like to get in the hot rod on nice days go for little day trips here and there. Same thing in the winter only we take the Silverado.
Good luck with your retirement.

Yes! I remember when I retired, one of my sisters asked, "What will you do!?". I told her that I had so many irons in the fire that I couldn't possibly die before I take care of them. It took three years just to work off the (non-dangerous) home repairs and upgrades that I'd been putting off!

Re: *Retirement Approching*

Congratulations! Keep busy with projects and hobbies and time will fly.

I retired in 2001 4 days before 9-11! I got a decent traditional pension and had been contributing to a 401(k) plan with a 50% company match for 34 years.

I didn't get a watch though...
My short watch story:
I had an office job and hate wearing a watch. I always put my watch on the desk and normally only wore it in meetings. When I retired, I started wearing it when I realized I needed it only for the day/date. That didn't last long though when I realized I didn't need to know the time OR DAY/DATE!

Enjoy!!!

Re: *Retirement Approching*

Congrats Zippi!
You'll wonder when you had time to work after a few months getting used to not having to be there.

I retired in January of 2010 so it will be 10 years real soon, I will admit the first 3 months I was like a caged animal with no work responsibility/duty's, big change for me but after I settled in...now you can't get me to go back to work. Let all them young ones get the ulcers and break out in hives! Just kidding of course Lol

Good Luck!!

That is one thing about retirement for me. I never know what day it is. They're all the same to me.

The only time it becomes an issue is trash day. I hear the truck coming up the hill and think "Uh oh. It's Friday" Then I have to make a mad dash to take my cans out before he gets there.

Re: *Retirement Approching*

Thanks guys. 1st day of retirement. Feels good setting here in my PJ's at the pc watching the wife get ready for work. Gotta cut the grass today and my new door seals are due in for my 49. Here is a couple pic of the Zippo lighter I bought back in 72 at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls TX and then when I was on the island of Luzon in the Philippines on Clark AFB in 74-75 I had it engraved by one of the local nationals down down.
