Front bumper mounted spare tire

Got a 94 k2500 with a slide in camper and getting to the under mount spare is a pain thinking of building a mount for the front bumper. Anyone done it ? Any issues to worry about? Any pics?

Re: Front bumper mounted spare tire

Only thing I have heard of is the cooling/overheating possibility. The tire will block most of the air flow from going directly thru the radiator, so make sure you leave a decent gap between the spare and from of grill so air can get into the radiator.

Re: Front bumper mounted spare tire

Used to see just such a spare tire mount style on the earlier square body trucks in the late 70s into the 80s. Was quite popular then with the amount of bed mounted cab over campers of the times. Good advice about the spacing out from the grill for air movement. Be sure you have a good radiator/fan shroud and proper fan/clutch and water pump. Don't see it much today but used to be quite prevalent on the road. Thinking welded braces and upright coming up off the front frame horns is the ticket. Good luck.

Yeah, I used to see them all the time and never heard of anyone having overheating problems, but it probably depends on the climate.

Did the original crank up mechanism fail? I'm not sure why some aftermarket outfit isn't making a heavy duty replacement? Or one could get the spare crank/winch off of a newer junkyard pickup and adapt it to the GMT400 frame.

Re: Front bumper mounted spare tire

Thanks guys I'm going to give it a try . My 79 g20 van has a front mount and dont run hot hope for the best I guess. No the factory stuff works but my camper hangs over the bumper so I can't get to the tire winch hole.

Re: Front bumper mounted spare tire

This is mine. I made it from a van tire carrier and bolted it to the brushguard. No cooling problems, this is Florida and I always pull a trailer with the a/c cranking.

I know this thread is a year old, but you wouldn’t happen to still have that and want to sell it, would you?
