Yea there is something about it that I really like...but I'm not sure what it is. I think it's interesting that the designers made the bed squared off and it doesn't match the tapering body line of the cab at all.

Re: The Government Mule - 62 c20 with service bed

Made a little progress over the past few weeks.. Made a transmission crossmember and got the motor all wired up. Bent up a new line for my hydraulic clutch and wired it up for an alternator instead of the old generator. Managed to give it a test crank yesterday and it hit on the first try. Started hanging some sheet metal and stuck the radiator back in. Have a power steering adapter plate on the way so that’s next. Still need to figure out a driveshaft and decide on whether to run springs or bags, but it’s getting close.

My 80 year old neighbor stopped by when I was working on it yesterday and asked if I needed any 16 inch tires...and I desperately do! He said he was getting some new ones on his class c rv so I could have the old ones...which I know aren’t that old. Score! I’m hoping they aren’t too tall for the front , but I think they should be alright.

Very cool project. Subbed for sure!

What's the plan for the utility bed? Just leaving it alone or doing something with it?

Pretty much going to leave the whole truck as is....aside from patching up a few holes in the cab. Plan is to have a usable work truck that ain’t scared to cruise!

Re: The Government Mule - 62 c20 with service bed

Sold the International so I’ve got room in the garage again. Got my power steering box mounted and cut down the steering shaft and welded it back up. Got a new high pressure hose for the power steering as well. Picked up a dual reservoir master cylinder and made an adapter plate to mount it to the firewall. Just received my CPP proportioning valve and can hopefully run some brake lines soon. Still need a new clutch master cylinder and the drive shaft fixed, but it’s getting close to mobile.

Definitely lots of character. Like the "20" badging style for that year.

Re: The Government Mule - 62 c20 with service bed

Been chipping away at things when I’ve managed to get a few free minutes. Got the dual reservoir master cylinder and clutch master cylinder mounted and got some brake lines bent up as well.

Also swapped in a cable throttle pedal. Need to get a proper stud for the carb side connection but what I’ve got rigged up works for now. Went with an early 90s suburban pedal and an 18ish inch cable off Amazon. Easy to mount, just needed to do a little bending to get everything lined up and the pedal height adjusted.

My neighbor gave me the tires he pulled from his rv. 215/85/16, so roughly 30.5” tall. Load range E which is probably a good thing for this heavy beast.

Measured for my driveshaft and hoping to take it soon to get cut down. After that, I think I just need to bleed the brakes and we might be mobile again!

Re: The Government Mule - 62 c20 with service bed

Went to the Charlotte Auto Fair last weekend and my brother brought down his Harbor Freight tire changer. We busted off the old tires and mounted the new ones while we were there. I gave them a little rattle can love yesterday, finished airing them up and tossed them on the truck.

It's coming along nicely! Love the tall tires. They just look right on the truck.

I’m digging it. I wished I’d remembered about the Spring Auto Fair. Looking good.

Thanks rusty! Thursday and Friday were perfect weather. Saturday was raining and a ton of folks had left by then, but we rode it out and had a great time.

I'll be happy when I get this thing mobile. I rolled it out of the garage the other day so I could clean up the mess underneath and straighten up a few things. It was quite a workout to get the truck moving, its a heavy beast!

Re: The Government Mule - 62 c20 with service bed

Ordered a Welder Series step notch yesterday. The utility bed is welded to the frame so I'm thinking I can cut out just a center section of the bed floor to give me enough access to install it. Hopefully my math is right and this should get the back bumper about an inch off the ground when it's aired out.

Re: The Government Mule - 62 c20 with service bed

I just found y’all and I’m subbed! I have a 64 292 that was a farm truck on the last farm here in Orange County around where I live in CA. They tear them down for houses faster than you can say stovebolt!! I’ll post some pics and hopefully we can keep each other motivated to get them back on the road. I had the CHP come by to inspect mine, was so old and not registered it was out of the system. Unfortunately out here in loopy land there is a special tax for commercial vehicles, which these pickups are classified. So a $50 registration is $300 so they can build some high speed train from LA to SF..... never gonna happen.

Keep up the progress and I’ll some pics of my 64 soon. I can’t wait to get mine wizzing past those little v8 things!

Thanks for checking in! Looking forward to seeing your build...sounds like its got a little bit of history to it. Glad to see another inline fan. Jealous you already have the 292 in yours. I might have a line on another 292 if my dad can work out a deal with the lady that has it. I don't even have anything to put it in, but I'm a sucker for these straight sixes...especially the big ones.

Registering in SC isn't too bad thank goodness, and no car inspections either. Sorry they stick it to you in Cali.
