Post Trans. mechanic said 700r4 is ok in his book

Talked to a local trans. mechanic w/ a well known rep and he said the 700r4 is great choice to put in our trucks. But... He said that if you go with a 373 rear-end or lower, you need to go with the TH350 instead. The 700 works better with the higher gears. He also said that a lot of the problems concurning preformance is brought on by the individual by not getting them set up right. This board has already mentioned that. Last thing he mentioned was that if you buy one or get one rebuilt, you need to get it installed and on the road. They cant take getting set up for any lenght of time. Maybe this will help some of you on your decissions.

700r4 are good trannies there are lots on the road. the biggest problem as you mentioned are not having the set up. That goes for anything on a vehicle. If it isn't set up properly it will never work correctly.. Its your truck put what trans you want in it. I'm looking for a 700 for my 68, the perfect combination on=f driveability and performance all in one

Was given this 86 pu by a friend. The back rear was gone. Found two nice 373's on an 86 burb that burned. Pulled the rears, the 350 trans, the np208, the shafts, bolts, everything but the oink. Put both front and rear difs in the 86 1500. The trans would not shift. It worked fine before! I did'nt touch it. Scratched my head, talked to Lee Miles, wanted 800 to rebuild it? I parked the truck. Bought the 72 4 sp., need a 700? a 350, 2 208's near NJ?

3.73 or numerically lower, right?

I dunno, I think a 700R4 is still perfectly fine in a truck with a 3.73 or 3.42. I'm pretty sure 3.42 is the stock ratio on almost every GM truck these days...it's what we've got in the Suburban and it's really a great ratio for a 700R4 and street-size tires.

I suppose it also depends on tire size. 3.73 with 275/60-15 tires is just too many RPMs at 80mph, in my opinion.

And though it's not a truck, they get put in Camaros with 2.73 and 3.23 rearends.

Running a 200R4 in my 66 panel with 3.07 rear end, real nice to let motor settle down to 1750 rpm at 70 mph. 200R4 has good 1-2 shift which 700 does not.

Well I have 3.73 in both my trucks and my 94 GMC has 4l60E (700r4 electornic controlled) and if you check out Randys Ring and Pinion and click on Calculator and calculate your Tire Size and Gear Ratio to 60 MPH and on that site it says 1800 - 2800 RpM is recommended for Small Blocks.

So with 3.73 Gear Ratio, and 275/60-15 Tires with following Tranny Combos and RPMs:

TH350/400: 2767 RPM
OD Auto: 1887 RPM
4 Speed: 2695 rpm
5 Speed: 2156 RPM

3.42
TH350/400: 2537
Auto OD: 1730
4 speed: 2471
5 spd: 1977

3.07
TH350/400: 2278
Auto OD: 1553
4 spd: 2218
5 spd: 1775

well as you can see these are basically Trannys that are set up with 3.73 Gear Ratio out of most newer trucks but with 700R4 you can have them built to run up too 3.08 gear Ratio but I would recommend leave 3.73 and just get the 700r4 and run it that way because if you are running Carb then ya don't want to lug the engine!! If you are running fuel injection then run 3.42 or higher since the computer will change Timing, Fuel and engine rpm to keep it from lugging with OD on @ 60 MPH !!
