swapping trans tree to floor shifter

I have a 235 with a 3 speed on tree...I bought a 216 that has a 3 speed floor shifter. Are these interchangeable? Are there do's/dont's on trans removal?

Re: swapping trans tree to floor shifter

Are you asking if the trans is interchangeable or the shifter?

Re: swapping trans tree to floor shifter

well if I can just put the floor shifter on the trans I have, I'm sure that would save me lots of time, but if that isn't possible, are the trans interchangeable. I guess some could tell from my basic questions, I'm no pro to this, so any help/guidance would be very appreciated.

Re: swapping trans tree to floor shifter

What year are the transmissions? Are they both from a truck or is one a truck and the other a car? If you don't know, please post pics of both of them.

Re: swapping trans tree to floor shifter

all truck and car 3 speeds were column shift in these vintages, so is it an aftermarket type like Hurst or later model Saginaw or GM? If it's a car trans and shifter the lever will be too short and may need modified to miss the seat. I put a Hurst shifter in my 1st 57 TF in 69 and had to drive around hunched over to reach it.

Re: swapping trans tree to floor shifter

I know the engine/trans that has the floor shifter came out of a 1949 truck, my truck is a 1950 and is the column shifter

You are good to go then. The truck 3 speed was externally unchanged 1948-54.

Re: swapping trans tree to floor shifter

so is there a way to just swap the floor shifter to my currently installed column shift transmission, or do I need to do a full trans swap?

Assuming both trucks are stock, the transmissions should be the same. Just swap the shifter and the transmission arms.

Re: swapping trans tree to floor shifter

Re: swapping trans tree to floor shifter

Can you post a picture of the trans with the floor shifter?

The last 3 speed with a factory floor shift was 47. The OP says he has a 49, so I am assuming it has an aftermarket floor shift conversion. Of course you know what happens to people who assume......
