Help with two-toning a white burb

I know there are a bunch of threads out there but none that have helped me yet. My suburban is all white with a black interior. Now I'm fine with the whole thing being white but the wife isn't. She and some friends say that it makes it look like an ambulance or utility truck. (It was originally purchased by a town in S.C. so it was something like that but I don't divulge that info to her.

So I have a greed that we can two-tone it but haven't come across the right combo yet. One - since all of the metal inside the truck and all of the jambs are white the truck needs to stay a "white truck" so to speak. I mean that the truck has to be prodominantly white. A lot of the two tone jobs I see out here have white in them but white is the secondary color. Like the blue and white one here. Do you think it would look OK if the blue went up to about where the door handles are and then went back to white for the rest of the top? I really want to keep all of the window trim white. It's pretty fresh paint and all of the gaskets, all of the, are new so I don't want to pull them or try to tape around them.

And I like the light green look two, but I think that it wouldn't vibe well with the black interior. What do you guys think? The wife says she likes blue and red. So maybe one thick middle red stripe? Can I get away with green? Suggestions?

Since you don't have the upper mouldings, I would just Paint the blue up to the beltline.then leave above the beltline white.

do you want an original color from 68? Or does it matter? I've always liked silver, but maroon has been growing on me lately.

An original color would be nice but it doesn't HAVE to be. Nor does it have to be from 68, anything from the era would still be good. I'm not worried about technical originality, I just want it to look period correct to the average guy. I've thought about silver as well, I think it would be subtle and match well but I'm worried it would look too modern.

The only thing I'd change on that burb is the passenger in the right seat! Beautiful as is. JUST kidding! But seriously - I think the 69-70 deluxe two tone scheme (ala your 1st pic) is the best looking. I'd definitely use a stock 68 color choice. I'd also add the lower belt molding, as that is the only paint divider you'd need for paint scheme #1 above. I personally think the Foose-like two tone - i.e. with no factory paint divider, looks not so hot on our trucks. But, since you asked - that's what I'd do - lower belt, then paint the 68 color of your choice up to the drip rail. One thing to keep in mind - this WILL make the existing interior white paint look way out of place - technically, the interior color should match the main body color. Have you tried talking her into just an interior soft materials color change (door panels, seats, pad, etc). Makes it look lese like an ambulance (even though I like that look) and avoids the paint job and all is headache (and odd interior/exterior paint combo issue) and may have the same end impact. Since you may not be worrying about staying stock - perhaps an orange highlander interior in the burb?? Not a 68 thing, but would be very nice. Anyway, just some thoughts. I'd keep the wife too - if she at least talks about trucks with you, she's a keeper!

White top only is a good option also - and you can avoid adding belt molding. Here are some motivational pics, and on to remember it by for how it was back in the day... (that gold 68 is sharp!) Still think white interior metal will look off a bit - are you planning on painting the interior also?

Well I really dont want to add moldings, I like how clean it is. Not gonna go buying stuff and drilling holes. An interior color swap could make things easier, but almost everything is brand new - I'm not gonna rip it out or paint it. Paint is also new - not gonna respray the interior. I'm thinkning about one big stripe, like this without the red roof.

Wouldn't it be difficult to have the stripe without the moldings? They cover up the color change line?

^^^^^Not at all. You use fine line tape for masking the edges - very sharp and workable at the same time. Same thing one would do with hood stripes etc. If I shot it with single stage it would be very easy - tape, mask shoot, done. That tends to leave an edge that you can technically, physically feel with a fingernail and faintly see up close. If I shot the color and then cleared all of those panels the physical and visual aspects of the change would be almost imperceptible, except for the color change itself, lol.

Have you ever thought about replacing the wheels, or just changing the color? As much as I am a HUGE fan of steelies, I do have to agree with those who think it looks "Ambulance-ish".

However, if you either changed or painted the wheels, that may be just enough to set it off.

You could always just paint the portion below the lower rocker belt-line.

Lol, def not changing the whole color. It's a white truck, it's staying a white truck for reasons stated earlier.

Lower belt line only could be an option, hard to imagine the right color and having it look OK. You dont really see all white trucks with color two-tone, its usually colored trucks with white added.

I love my little rims and caps.

I think you should put a fire dept logo on the driver and passenger doors and call it retro work (cool). I think if it looked like an old school fire chiefs vehicle from the late 60s she would dig it, you wouldn't have to do more than paint/decals on the top two doors maybe a quarter panel banner that says " ----- Fire " and call it good.

Here is a 1967 Burb I bought a few years ago and resold. It now belongs to board member 67Burb. I don't know if the color is original but I think the colors on the Burb work great and it looks super.
