American BBQ

I am sitting here watching Southern Barbeque Everything on the GAC channel. OMG! I've never thought there could be so many ways to BBQ meat and serve it. I love BBQ and could eat it everyday of the week. It wouldn't do for me to own a restaurant as I'd eat up all the profits.
As far as chains go, down here we have The Rib Crib, over in Memphis there's Corky's and just up in Branson, Mo there is Famous Dave's. Oh man, I do love that one.
What's good in your area?

Re: American BBQ

The best places are one-off holes in the wall. There is a Wash, DC area small chain called Urban BBQ that does everything up excellent. I like a place with great bean & greens (sloooowww cooked). Up by the PA line is Chubby's. His motto is "Good food ain't cheap and cheap food ain't good". That's a pretty good one, but I beg to differ. He's right proud of his food and it's reflected in the price. Seems like a motto to justify high prices. I've had great BBQ that cost half as much. Then there is what I cook myself. My motto is "Cheap food is best!" .

Out of Baltimore has emerged ways of doing meat up that is all it's own. Now spread around the area. These huts started popping up in corners of gas station lots, roadside, under a tent, etc. he first small local chain started off under a circus-type tent with picnic tables, called The Canopy. No sauce, it's not BBQ. It's called a pit beef sandwich. Obviously cooked over a flame in a pit. Served on a Kaiser roll, juicy as a hot kiss, and most (incl. me) like it with horseradish, and I shake pepper on it... medium rare! That's it... Fantastic!! Most places now also serve Ham, turkey, and pork done the same way. Put a big chunk on the grille and keep slicing off of it. Many places also offer smoked or BBQ chicken, ribs, turkey legs, and such. Greens & beans same as the BBQ joints. But he other local side served is "ocean fries". Hand cut, skin on, cooked in peanu+ oil. Yum!

Re: American BBQ

There are only a couple local BBQ places around here.

Billy Bob's
The Outpost, this one is probably the best around. Open Thursday thru Sunday.

Boog, there is a place on 412 between Harrison and Huntsville called Sugar Boogers. It's a mom and pop place thats only open seasonal. It might be a bit of a drive for you but closer than Branson. I enjoy it enough that we take family and friends there when we have visitors.

Re: American BBQ

30 odd years ago there was a family cooking and selling bbq right in their front yard in town over in Marianna. I remember they piled meat between 2 slices of white bread for $2 and had various condiments too. Man o man, it was good. My brother in law was part Italian and he sure did know where to get good food. He put me onto some good spots.

Boog, there's a good place called the Smoke Shack on the west side of the Morgan Maumelle exit. I stop there any time I can.

There is a good one here called T's BBQ. The main restaurant is at the south end of the bridge on Main Street, and they have a small place on HWY 65 North toward Branson.

There ain't no one BBQ. I love them all! > even mine Each regional variety lays claim to being the best. They are all wrong. They are all different and they are all the best! I bet I have at least 1/2 doz. types open in my fridge right now and more in the pantry. Then there are the rubs.

I own a 3 Webers, the little table top, 18", and the large one. Then there's the vertical smoker and the laid down offset barrel one. No gas or briquettes for me, all real charcoal. Right out the back door. I can roll the 18" up under the portico if it's raining hard. There isn't much in the way of weather that keeps me from grilling, smoking, bar-b-qing.

When my older son graduated HS we ordered a bunch of BBQ from Bob's in Wilson, NC. Mmmm-M! It came packed in dry ice and they gave us a bumper sticker with it that says "Oink if you love BBQ". I stuck it on my 30' walkboard where it is proudly displayed to this day... 23 years later. OINK OINK, get out of my way you Sunday driver. I have some BBQ waiting for me up this road!! Follow me!!! Plenty for all.

Re: American BBQ

a few years ago 71swb4x4 and I met up with some DesMoines locals and ate at a place called Smokey D's. that was some good food.

in Sept '16 wife and I went with a friend and his wife to the Dalton GA area for a gun forum meet-shoot-BBQ. The owner had a smoker made from a farm propane tank, about 8' long. He put almost 100# pork butt in that and let it go for a day. Slathered with his own sauce, mmmmmmmmmm.

We have a Famous Dave's here. They're OK but I prefer the small independent spots

My daughter brought some for me once when she still lived in Oakland. Remember it being quite good. There aren't a lot of places down this way so I tend to do my own these days.

Im tellin ya K, the Weber kettles are the best. My folks gave me their old one. Im guessing its as old as I am or close to it. Ive got one of those offset horizontal jobs as well. It too does a great job.

We shot out to Twain Harte last weekend to hang with a friend and hit the casino by Sonora. On the way up, we stopped by a butcher shop in Jamestown - Rawhide Meats that Ive wanted to stop at for the last 10 years. Its owned by a 6 local ranchers that also bought a processing plant up the road. 90% of their meat is local and all of it is processed and prepared there.

I wasn't disappointed! Picked up some naturally cured maple bacon, peppered bacon, mild Italian sausage, bulk chorizo and breakfast sausage, a couple of pounds of flatirons, a couple of nice chuck eyes and some Elk. Prices were great for the quality and quantity of meat.

It was meant to go home with us.

On the way home at the end of the weekend, we had to replace the bacon and all of the sausage and pick up some meat sticks for my sone who just got braces and can't eat his favorite jerky. The bacon and meat sticks were gone by the morning after we returned home!

Gonna try and smoke the Chuck Eyes and que up the Elk this weekend!

Re: American BBQ

See? That's where the motto "Good food ain't cheap, cheap food ain't good" fails> Home cooked! We have Mt. Airy Locker Plant on "my" edge of town. First thing I hit going in. All other business is in the heart of the old town or the other end. They butcher on Wed, so that is the best day to buy. All local product. I was at the ATCA National Show & Convention at Macungie, PA, 3+ hours from here. I was talking to a man down from Vermont and when I told him I was from Maryland he asked what town. When I told him a small town in Central MD called Mt. Airy he lit up and told me he knew of the locker plant. Their every day prices are cheaper than the big grocery store best sale price reduced for quick sale, and this is local grazed beef not feed lot meat factory. You can guess where I buy my meats.

https://www.google.com/maps/uv?hl=en...oiowD3oECAYQBg

Get it cut any way you want... and watch it be done by your neighbors. Yeah, they all know me.

This was taken before I got the barrel smoker. I keep the kettle in the screen house since it doesn't get used as often. I've had it since 1990.

Re: American BBQ

I dig the grub shack. Thankfully Ive got nothing like that or that might be my part time residence .

Well the Italian sausages just disappeared.

The Wife cooked up an AWESOME broccoli cheddar soup but the boy has his buddy (he's nearly adopted at this point) over who's diabetic. He can't have a lot of carbs and Im not gonna let him go without eating. So the two of them just dusted the 2lbs of sausages. In 5 minutes no less. Damn 13 year olds!

Re: American BBQ

The protein will do those boys well with their growth spurts. Did I mention the locker plant's sausages? The loose sage make patties you can eat with just gums (I'd think ). They do maplewurst and applewurst. Then, now that the son is at the helm, mango habanero! They do something different every week.
