Dash prep for paint
I am in the process of changing my interior and want to change the color of my dash ( the metal half ) and was wondering what's the best way to prep the metal and what paint should I use ? Also I plan on using spray cans as I don't have a compressor or spray gun. Thanks in advance for your help.

You just need to sand it down with a 320 or so sand paper, clean it up with a wax and gease remover, wipe it down w a tacky cloth to remove any lint tape everything off and paint. If you are using spray paint I have had some recent success with a Valspar implement paint that Tractor Supply sales. I detailed everything underneath the hood with this paint and was pleasantly suprised.

What's a tacky cloth ? I was thinking of using the same interior die paint that I'm using on the trim does anyone know if it works well on metal ? I'm assuming no matter what I use I should prime first right ?

It just what its called. Usually in the paint supply areas in small plastic wrappers. Its a cheeses cloth with a tackyness that picks up lent ect so it doesnt end up in your paint. To my knowledge that plastic and vinyl paint doesnt do as well on metal but someone feel free to chime in. I have used it but only on vinyl.

I bought a military Blazer, those soldiers rode it hard, so I had nothing to lose trying the SEM interior paints on that truck. I've had really great success on that truck so much so that I'm going to do the same stuff on my 79 2wd K5. I didn't do too much prep, just the basics without buying the two and three step "special prep wundermagic" products. It's military, I went cheap. I sprayed the vinyl parts down with purple degreaser and let it sit a few minutes before scrubbing down very well with a pretty coarse nylon cleaning brush with a hose to rinse clean. That's all the prep I did, after that I let them dry in the sun then gave them several good coats of the SEM vinyl dye. Works great. CarQuest carries it, no need to order online.

SEM makes a great prep/cleaner for their dyes. It comes as an aerosol too.
