Re: Vacuum hose routing/ diagram?

Got it. Thank you.

One last question, which end of the check valve goes towards the air cleaner? (guessing I can suck on the vacuum hose and see if it opens and stays open, but just want to be sure it's working ok).

I took the check valve off initially. Still have it though.

Thanks again for the help. The truck started running like crap and I found a broken rotted vacuum line. Spliced it back together and it ran better than it has in years. Then got industrious and decided to redo ALL the lines, and some of the multiple hose connectors were screwed up and not easy to figure out what hose went where when I was replacing hoses.

Re: Vacuum hose routing/ diagram?

The air filter kinda makes it simple, the motor connects on the right port, manifold to the left.

Re: Vacuum hose routing/ diagram?

Got it hooked up as described. Seems to run ok but still has a hiccup when I go into 2nd and third till I get the RPM's up, and doesn't seem to have the power it did when I had everything in place.

Not sure what to try next.

EGR is off
EFE is unhooked
TVS is unhooked and plugged off.
rear manifold vacuum source has one outlet going to HVAC, and the other to air cleaner with check valve in place
Canister purge is going to middle carb port
vacuum advance is straight to J port on front of carb
New PCV valve hooked to carb and canister (still plumbed like it was)

Could that delay valve (or lack thereof) in the vacuum advance be causing the hesitation?

Re: Vacuum hose routing/ diagram?

Do you have manifold vac going to a switch mounted on the passenger side firewall?

Re: Vacuum hose routing/ diagram?

Also your vacuum advance could be busted, the outside of yours looks pretty corroded.

Nope. Didnt see any kind of switch.

Could be vacuum advance. With all the plumbing in place it ran great, but all that plumbing was in crappy shape so I think it's something I've done rather than a bad component, but I know how things go with these old rigs.

Was timing controlled by any of this crap, and by removing it should I adjust timing?

Any chance you could take a good picture of your engine bay?

Re: Vacuum hose routing/ diagram?

Huh, well there's my nice clear diagram for my truck! LOL

So when you say "switch on the firewall" were you referring to the HVAC control hose? It is hooked to the manifold vacuum on the back on the motor.

Have the other nipple on the manifold vacuum going to the hose on the air cleaner.

Have vac advance going straight to carb.

Have EGR blocked off for now (have some caps ordered, should be here in a day or two)

Have front TVS on the thermostat housing looped back into itself for now (will put caps on when the come in)

Left carb to PCV line and line from PCV to canister where it was

Put line from canister to other nipple on front of carb. Canister is plumbed as it was stock with the exception of the purge signal hose, which I now have going straight to the carb.

Anything I'm missing here? It runs ok, but doesn't have the power it did before I starting putting new hoses on, and the big issue is a bucking and missing when I go into third gear (4th if you're considering granny low to be 1st)

Re: Vacuum hose routing/ diagram?

Bump. Anyone got any ideas on what could be causing this hiccuping in high gear?

Re: Vacuum hose routing/ diagram?

I'm leaning on your timing. But it could be anything, as a test you can try sucking on thr hose running to the dizzy. If you get air the advance is busted.

Re: Vacuum hose routing/ diagram?

I'll try that. I know when I desmogged my Jeeps I had to adjust the timing. Wasn't sure if the same held true on these old SBC's or not.

What should timing be (ballpark) on this thing?

Never done this with a SBC before. From what I found nosing around seaching best bet is to mark off TDC and then try to get the marks to be there at about 2500-3000RPM's with the advance hooked up.

That sound right?

Re: Vacuum hose routing/ diagram?

So my A/C went out in my daily driver so I've been driving the truck a bit again.

I still feel like it's lacking in power, and last week I actually towed a trailer with an ATV on it and it struggled on the highway and had a bit of labor knock as well.

Which leads me back to a timing issue.

I've got to find my timing light (probably been 10 years since I used it). Anyone have a factory service manual in PDF, or does anyone have one that would post timing specs?

Re: Vacuum hose routing/ diagram?

Nope. Haven't been driving the square much. Just around town maybe once a month.

I still think my timing needs to be adjusted, but I haven't been towing with it or anything, and it does fair around town.

Wife and I had a baby late last summer so haven't had time to do much tinkering on any of my toys for a few months.

Re: Vacuum hose routing/ diagram?

I'm about to embark on this mission myself. My 84 h as everything there and hooked up and just runs crappy. I don't know what all EGR stuff to remove and what to keep.
