Re: The oil is not even 3,000 miles

"Royal Purple is synthetic racing oil...supposed to get ya 10 hp"

Don't forget one of those magnetic fuel line thingies from JC Whitney..that should be worth 20 hp easy!!

Re: The oil is not even 3,000 miles

I had a SBC "rebuilt" and it continued to burn lots of oil (qt./500 miles)for 20,000 miles and during this time the oil got black pretty quickly.
Then suddemly it stopped burning/turning black.A quart would last past 1000 miles and didn't darken so much.So I switched to synthetic (Mobil-1).

It is my belief that the "builder" didn't prep the cylinders correctly,or mismatched the rings to the job and break-in was delayed.
This could be happening here too.
What is your oil consumption rate?

Note that Moble 1 definitely does not have enough ZDDP for a flat-tappet cam.

That's a big leap from some black oil that hasn't been changed recently

Re: The oil is not even 3,000 miles

Noted.
OP seemed to think his oil got black quickly and I noticed the same thing in a motor that wouldn't break-in.Sorry if that seems like a "leap".

I changed the oil in late october, and the oil was getting a quart every two weeks. Now the oil is almost a quart a month.

You're sure it isn't leaking?

Re: The oil is not even 3,000 miles

Sounds like you`re breaking it in.Race cars change their oil alot more often than 3,000 miles.Hi-RPMs break the oil down alot quicker than normal driving.Think...burnouts,haulin`ass...

Try looking at the ground first, usually if it is leaking badly enough to lose quarts of oil you will see evidence in your normal parking spot. It you do find fresh oil on the ground, it is probably the oil pan, valve covers, intake manifold, and/or rear main seal (it is a SBC, after all).
