Re: Greg's 50 Build

Good lookin' project
if it were me and you have a chance to rebuild that motor from ground up !
I would replace the cam - if you are going all new just add that to the pile .
just sayin ,

Greg sorry about your tire. I know you inquired about my wheel tire combo on my thread. Shoot me a PM, might have a solution for your tire situation.

Thanks. I was disappointed someone walked off with the wheel but it was just a roller. I paid $30 for it so I had something to roll around on. I'll find another but its just an annoyance. Atleast I had a donut there to use for the time being.

I'll send you a message. I really like the looks of your wheel and tire combo. I'm hoping to avoid tubs so I probably can't go that big though.

Re: Greg's 50 Build

Well I have made no progress because I haven't been able to make it up to my Dad's house to work on the truck any more. The engine is at the machine shop now so I am waiting on parts to come back. In the mean time my dad's repair shop got slow so they drug my truck in and tore it down. When I go up there next time I still have to gut the cab but then it and the front clip can head to media blast.

I won't be using this frame since I built the other one but this one is in great shape. I hope I can find someone in need of a good short bed frame. I'd hate to scrap it.

Here are some pics.

Lifts make it easy

Re: Greg's 50 Build

By all means, if you can keep that frame, do so! Even if you strip it down to just the frame rails/cross-members, somebody out there is or will want a stock frame. I know from my experience, after searching Washington, Idaho and Oregon before finding one reasonably close, it is worth saving and passing along.

I plan on finding the frame a new home. I have a place to keep it for a while but only for a while.

Re: Greg's 50 Build

I had to go up north for a wedding but was able to get in a few hours on my cab. I pulled the windshield and 3 rear windows. One of the corner glass was nice enough to keep but the other was badly scratched. My cab is in better shape than I thought. The floor has the typical rust, needs cab corners, and the passenger cowl is damaged. I was happy to find that my window channels were all solid, I expected the typical rust in the lower windshield corners but was presently surprised. Here are a few pics to accompany the post and I was able to get a picture of the carnage to the original engine. There are holes on both sides of the block but I only took a picture of the big hole.

Other than that I have just been ordering parts.

glad to hear the cab isn't so bad. Every little bit counts and adds up in the end.

Re: Greg's 50 Build

I need some help. I got my cab all stripped down and ready to go to the sand blaster. I need to gut the doors not but I don't know how to get the stainless off the outside of the windows. It looks like one piece but comes together at the top. I can't find a screw or anything so I figured I'd ask before prying it off. Any one know how to get it off?

Re: Greg's 50 Build

Don't pry them.. Yes, there are screws in them as MIKESAD50 said. I've had them with 1 at the top and up to 4 total around the trim under seal area.
Usually at least 1 at top around where they clip together.

Re: Greg's 50 Build

yeah I was wrong, just found my piece. I counted two screw holes up top off a 48 gmc door. the whole unit clips in so to speak so once the screws are out, it should "pry" off.

I guess its a good thing I asked. It would have been an expensive mistake otherwise.

I'll still be really careful after I get the screws out. Then off to the blasters. I can't wait to get it back from the blasters so I can get to the metal work. I am anxious to get to the color!

Re: Greg's 50 Build

So I have been really good at slacking on my project. I still have my truck stored at my fathers house 4 hours away because he has alot of tools I need that I don't have. Because of that I don't get alot of time to work on the truck. Once the motor, transmission, and cab are on the finished frame its coming home. I have the frame mostly done, I haven't put in the fuel system yet (sorry Steve still no pump installed, its on the shelf wating for me to do at home). the machine shop that had my motor went out of buisness and the owner said he would just finish it for me on the side. That took over 6 months. Then I took time off to work on it and my grand mother died. The next month I tried again and found that the machine shop had lost a main cap bolt and it was sunday... Well, This weekend I finally got someplace. I think one or two more trips up there and I can bring it home.

A picture of the cab sitting back on the frame.

Some engine progress. I wasn't going to cut corners so I got a new cam, new pistons, and new lifters.. Plus alot more. I am going to polish that front cover later when the truck is home. I didn't have the locating dowels so the heads aren't on yet.

I'm pretty excited to see some progress.

Sorry to hear about your Grandmother. Completing these builds takes a lot and life does happen. Good for you for pushing ahead.

Is that a Pontiac convertible in the background?

Re: Greg's 50 Build

Thanks guys. Hard times do come and go. My grandma almost died a year ago and it didn't look good so this whole last year was like grandma bonus time which we were all thankful for. She was almost 90 so it was a good run, she lived a good life.

Oh and that old convertable. Yeah its a Pontiac. Its a 1967 GTO. Its just been sitting in a corner of the garage taking up space for over 30 years. My dad bought it in 1984 for $100. It was time to haul it off to the scrap yard to make room.

Re: Greg's 50 Build

Ok Ok... I'm mean I know. I told my dad that someone asked about his car on my forum and he put me up to saying we scrapped it. I was just joking about hauling the GTO to the scrap heap. It has sat since the engine fire it had around 1979 and my dad bought it in 1984. We stripped it down to the shell and started the body work that weekend my engine work fell through due to the missing main cap bolt. As you see it is after the car was stripped down and we were about to haul it to my dad's shop. We had to roll my truck out to get to it and thats why it was outside and prime for a picture. The GTO is missing the motor and transmission so the current plan is to as a 6.0 LS. Otherwise the car will stay stock so it looks 1967. The only reason for the LS is that my dad wants to drive it and the newer motor with fuel injection will get better fuel economy compared to an old big block and it will have good power. The car is really far from perfect and it will never be numbers matching so its just going to be a summer cruiser and not a show car. He has dreamed about this car since he bought it but something always came up. This time its happening.
