Re: Lets see your trailer

You can hardly see it in this pic but it's the only picture I could find of my 5th wheel. It's stationary now on my property and I rent it out.

It's an Alpha. Which is odd because my wife's name is Omega.

I've had a lot of good times in that trailer. Believe it or not. That's a 3 car garage in the picture.

Found another one. Old picture with my tenant's crappy Toyota out front. That car refuses to die. It's still going strong to this day.

Re: Lets see your trailer

Here's my flatbed trailer I built in 2003. All boxed tubing, 5,200-lb drop axles with electric brakes. Custom frame to get the deck extra low, but still be able to haul any light truck or car.

Here's how it looked when new in 2003 (only f*rds were used during commission testing):

Here's how it looks now, "better" than new due to the patina. I've gone through a at least 3 jacks (mostly due to operator error while on loan), one set of bearings, tires, and some wiring repairs. But it's still reliable as ever.

How the heck does somebody wreck a manual crank jack!? They forget to lower it?

Re: Lets see your trailer

It’s a low trailer, not the rotating type of jack, and they don’t retract it all the way up.

Re: Lets see your trailer

A couple of years ago, my painted steel boat trailer began to "taco" as the cross-members rusted. As I dunk into either fresh or salty water these days, I replaced it with an aluminum trailer. It may seem nuts to put a new trailer under a 1987 boat, but it's actually in really good shape and paid for!

In any event, the side rails, axle, and tongue were still solid on the trailer, 1/8" thick 3" x 4" steel that I had access to flush with clean water all of these years. It was the cross members that couldn't be flushed. I rebuilt it into a flat deck 3,000 lb. cargo trailer. I found a truck tool box for $20 and a free bed liner on Craigslist. I dropped $100 on 3/8" thick expanded steel grate (about the same cost as wood!) and a little more for a couple of pieces for underdeck cross supports. I shortened the tongue, welding it in as a new rear main cross member. I fishplated a couple of spots along the A-frame up front and relocated the coupler atop the tongue, bolted AND welded to ensure safety. I used some 2"x4" lumber leftover as forms from a concrete project to provide a structural framework for the removable cargo box and built some tailgate hinges from spare cut Jeep windshield brackets.

I kept the winch and the brakes. I built a rack for my ramps under the deck. The original boat bunks are cut up and in the truck box for use as wheel chocks, cribbing, and ramp supports. The axle is centered under the cargo deck for balance, with the truck box, spare tire, etc. providing a bit of positive tongue weight for good and safe tracking.

I painted it with brushed on Rustoleum and made custom vinyl graphics on my wife's Cricut machine.

It works great! My neighbor even used it to haul his side-by-side ATV a couple of hundred miles up the road. It works well for hauling my TUG and for buying mulch in bulk. It holds a couple of cubic yards, much cheaper than bags and a lot easier to spread as I can use the TUG to pull the trailer about the yard, pitchforking it off as I go and not digging ruts into the lawn.

As the trailer has permanent tags on it and all of the critical welds are still factory, the entire job cost me less than $300. There's no finding a 3,000 lb. cargo trailer for that price! Well, not a safe one, anyway...

Re: Lets see your trailer

i cleaned out a farm about 100 miles away, bought 5 (eventually 8) trucks from him. I worried about getting them all home and he said he went to school with the guy who ran the local tow company, they would give me a good deal. i called and they said sure, when we have something to pick up in your town we will bring a truck for you, keep the cost down.

the first truck was almost 350 dollars. I cried foul, that was more than any other tow company quoted, they even charged me an extra $20 for being 1 mile into the next town north. clearly i was over the barrel, though. the farmer felt bad so he sold me his steel deck trailer for $1000 and I hauled the other 4 (eventually 7) home, I figure I am in it negative bucks now. has a hand crank derrick winch from the 20s on it, two speed and has two handles, with two guys and in low speed you can pull the deadest flattest truck right up.

I wish you could still buy this type of Sheetmetal.

i like it too, very grippy!

the trailer is a weird one, title says 1963, has a welded name BOBCOX or BABCOX. full perimeter tie down, drive over fenders, the ramps would hold an excavator. its 5 on 5.5 electric brake axles but has at least 10k worth of leaf springs under it so it was made prior to the common thing where 8 lug = 10k lbs. I cant find any replacement wheels though, it has 4.25 centerbore and needs less than 3.5" backspace, i cant run a standard ST tire on these. thinking of changing the axles if I keep it, wider axles will let me widen the fenders a couple inches per side. I will probably just sell it on as is though.
