Re: beginner painting

This is an excellent buy on a compressor...https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-60-G...sor/1000542193

Not just a twin piston but also 2 stage! I've never seen a 60 gallon that wasn't twin piston. Many 30 gallon are also twin piston. Mine is an OLD Speedaire commercial duty, very similar to this one....https://www.amazon.com/Speedaire-1NN...detail-bullets
Except an early 70's USA version rated for continuous duty!

I think there is a twin piston Kobalt at Lowe's for around $400 that's on a 30 gallon tank. It's just right for most homeowners to do anything. Most 60 gallon will require a 230v power supply.

Here is one I was looking at https://www.harborfreight.com/27-gal...sor-56403.html

Trying to get something a bit portable and that takes up less space. Thoughts?

Think the CFM is too low. From what I read on other autobody forums you really need 10CFM minimum and closer to 15 is possible.
Can be done with less --- but more chance of bad spray.

For the money I'd go this route instead... https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-QUIE...sor/1001014062

The pump is a double style like the California Air Tools brand. I've actually threatened to buy one myself cause they're quiet.

Anything around 25-30 gallon and 5cfm @ 90psi will get you around the car before you run out of air.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I am looking at doing it in pieces. Hood, fenders, bed, doors, ya know, start out slow. LOL I am hoping my 19yo kid will be interested in doing this so the truck doesn't rot to death like my 65 did.

The price point will make my wife happy as well. And I have extra cash to get the other stuff I need. Thanks man. RR

Curious .... Whats this number mean then ...

https://www.amazon.com/Devilbiss-Fin...TP6MC0QSNGA8KP

"Requires 13 CFM at 23 PSI"

Re: beginner painting

The gun is most likely designed around 23 psig air and requires 13 cfm. For reference, that would be 3.6 cfm at 120 psig at your compressor. Calculated with the density of air at 70 degrees F.

In practical terms means that that gun cant be supported with that compressor right ?

Or ?

Re: beginner painting

I ran those numbers again and you are correct. That compressor will only supply about 12.5 cfm at 23 psig if it provides 4.5 cfm at 90 psig.

Thanks.
Have you ever painted with a smaller compressor like mentioned above ?
I think a few of us have space issues for a large 80 gallon.
My main concern would be stopping in time before the compressor kicked and caused a flow problem.

Part of reason for looking at those turbine systems.

Not with the specified HVLP cap on the gun. You can change out the air cap on the gun to a standard version. The whole HVLP thing came about to meet EPA "low VOC" requirements. A lot less crap being blown around into the atmosphere at lower pressures. The newest HTE guns do an even better job of transferring material to the surface instead of just blowing it around as overspray. That exact same gun with a regular air cap needs 9.9cfm at 40psi, which is more like any other gun. Realistically......don't worry too much about it. Get a 25+ gallon compressor and a decent paint gun then put in some practice with your gun. You will learn exactly how to set your gun and pressure to flow out nice. It's also helpful to have a small inline regulator right at the gun. You can run the main line pressure up and when the compressor starts running and not keeping up you start opening your gun regulator more and more to keep that same steady pressure at the gun. Not usually a problem even with a smaller tank unless it's a van, suv, etc with lots of surface area to cover.
I painted my son's car with this gun......https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-HV...00SG/203497812

I've got the Eastwood concours gun...its a good spraying gun ...I'm using a IR 60 gal vert compressor..I've also used kobalt and some kind of elcheapo guns in the past..the Eastwood is the best gun so far that I've used...I also am using the devilbiss dekup system on it ..and I really like it..

There's a pro that made a Spectrum VS Widow HTE comparison. Basically he felt there was not enough difference to warrant spending the extra money.

That video (plus reviews on website) was the one that go me thinking about that gun.

https://www.about-air-compressors.com/calculating-cfm/

I'll have to do that calc later lol ....... gotta go study math.

thx guys

Re: beginner painting

My son and I are going to go with the Kobalt compressor mentioned above. I think it will do what we need. We are planning on taking parts off the truck and do them separately Our plan is to buy a fairly inexpensive gun as well. One panel or piece at a time is how we are going to tackle it for now. Start with something Fairly simple, maybe the hood, and go from there.

That sounds like it would work to me. Dont have that option with my panel

Re: beginner painting

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but never sand anything with your fingers, use a sanding block. I use the soft ones like this:
https://smile.amazon.com/3M-05526-We...543333&sr=8-23

what happens is this: if you use your hand, you cut little fingers shaped groves instead of making the surface flat. It will be uneven and you will be a able to see that.

Also, it seemed that your spray coverage was not great.
Hold the piece and can upright.

Honestly this feels pretty half assed. Oh I only have one can of clear, fugit, let's go! and then you wonder why it doesn't look good.
Painting is hard, you gotta follow the rules.

Also, cut and buff the clear it WILL look better if you do that!
(something like 800, 150,2000) but you need to have enough clear on it first!

Keep at it!

Re: beginner painting

thanks all....

I ended up buying a turbine system. In the end it gives me the ability to get a half decent paintjob (with practice) - but also use the equipment at my rentals for painting. There is a good thread on the hamb showing results people got - just made more sense for my situation.

I do have another question ...... I bought the truck and some of the body work had been done. Mostly skim coat which you can just tell in certain areas ..... and then painted in a matt black. What I cant tell is if its a black primer or actual base coat ..... Im guessing primer .....

So how would you address this .... I do some some pinhole type surface rust on the front visor outer skin area ..... not sure if pics picked it up.

Truck is a little dirty - been sitting for 3+ years.

Re: beginner painting

I don't think it's worth painting over someone else's paint job, especially if you see obvious flaws in it.
Then again, if it's not rusted through in 3 years that's a good sign.

I would do a complete prep on it like you would any way. Maybe do it one fender at a time?

So take it back how far - the body (mostly) looks good on the skim coat ..... so just sand back until I hit metal and/or filler coat ? Basically remove all the paint and stop ...... then reprime.

Go from there.

It's hard to tell, but that second pic, the closeup is what I would take down to metal. It looks like its rusting and needs to be treated.
I'd start with the worst parts and see what is under there.

Then again, what are your goals and budget, both in money and time?

Re: beginner painting

I've used the turbine sprayer for years and I love it. No worries about oil moisture nice and quiet, portable and all different size tips and nozzles for different applications. Little trick for spray cans. Spray in one direction only. Works for me..Fakky I hope you're using metal prep on those panels before you prime them
