Bare metal protection

I had my blazer at a body shop where they stripped the rear quarters of paint. They sat on the job for almost 6 months and I recently picked it up. the restorer that I am going to have to the work cannot get my vehicle in until the spring time. I am not a painter and I do not have the equipment to epoxy prime the quarters. Is there an aerosol epoxy prime that would at least preserve Mike Waters from surface rust and oxidization while I wait to get it to the next shop?

If the new shop does it right, they should take it to bare metal anyway to do their work...for the time being you could just brush or paint roll some epoxy on it till then...

If it’s been sitting striped for six months you probably have some surface rust I would ask the people that are going to do the work for you as they are the ones that is going to have to deal with whatever you put on there If it’s clean Metal do you like mongo said and roller brush some primer on it

The fabricator said to just use aerosol etching primer with a top coat of clear. He said not ideal but we are an hour apart and he is very busy. Ordered some from Amazon and should be here in a couple of days.

Here are some pictures of the present condition. The fabricator looked at the pictures and said we have to get something on them ASAP.

It looks like there is some surface rust already. I would use a surface conditioning disc and take it all down.

Eastwood makes 2k epoxy primer cans as well as a roll on paint. I wouldn't use the roll on but I have used the 2k cans on an engine. You push the button on the bottom, shake, spray. Its expensive but will do the job properly. If the next guy that is going to work on it wont do the work over your epoxy (which is quite common) then don't bother with the epoxy since it will all be removed and just rattle can it for now.

What kind of surface conditioning disc? 2" Roloc? fine, medium, course? I was looking at it today and there are a couple of baseball size spots of surface rust starting and would like to try to clean it up. Remember I am disabled and have no shoulder or arm strength anymore so I am limited in what I can do. My fabricator/restorer does strip to bare metal and uses almost no filler, a true craftsman. He even does lead work on vehicles that require it. I was so impressed with his work and work ethic I decided I want him to do the work. It wont be until next spring but I will post lots of pictures of his progress when he starts.

Rolocs work great..but theres all sorts of rolocs...some are sanding discs, some are scotchbrite, some are the finger style...I wouldn't use a real coarse one on it...go with medium....unless its sitting outside In a rust prone environment...I wouldnt sweat it to much....if hes that good, hes gonna strip it to bare metal anyway...

A 2'' disc on a die grinder isn't too bad to handle but since he is stripping it anyway just rattle can it and call it a day.

Metal prep/rust remover with zinc was designed for this situation. Clean the rust off best you can with a wire wheel. Soak some rags or paper towels with the rust remove and lay on the panel. It will dissolve the remaining rust and leave a zinc phosphate film to prevent it from rusting for up to a year in doors
