Post What's with aftermarket sheet metal?

Just got cowl induction hood for my 98 GMC. I was just like a little kid at Christmas when we opened the box at the bodyshop. Holy crap is this thing ever thin. It must be 24ga or thinner. Both Goodmark and Reflexion's are paper thin(same hood I think). A buddy got some Goodmark SWB boxsides for his 72, and the same thing. Thinner then the factory metal on my new truck. These products do look good, and do fit with no problems, but I'm almost scared to close my hood for fear of bending it. Not like the metal on the old trucks.

I know I have heard vendors on this board say that the Goodmark fenders were actually a heaver guage but the stock fenders weigh more(figure that one out?) and I was not that happy with the way they fit neither.

Just used a micrometer on the original sheet metal, the Doors, bedsides, fenders, rockers, tailgates, etc........ are 0.0375 this is on 67-72 parts, wifes gone in the 88 at present will mic it upon its return.
The replacement parts thickness sold by us micrometer reads 0.042 on EVERY BODY PANEL( Doors, hoods, fenders, patch panels, tailgates, etc...., both were done on painted surfaces. The old metal still had primer, and exterior paint on it, the reproductions have only the EDP primer on them. Reflexion hoods are not the same as a goodmark Hood. They are made by 2 seperate manufacturers. I won't sell reflexions hood as most are dissatisfied with the quality.

The micrometer reads 0.030 on the 1988 GMC we own and this is also on a primered factory painted surface.

So it would appear that 67-72 sheetmetal is originally 20 gauge 20=0.0359 , the 1988 sheetmetal would appear to be 22 or 23 gauge
22=0.0299 23=0.0269
and our replacement panels would appear to be 19 gauge 19=0.0418

Wish I would have checked into that before I bought one. Kind of hard to find these things out in Canada as most shops all buy from the same suppliers. Too expensive to get one piece shipped out of the States too.

Be wary when buying cab corners too. I had to cut the flanges off, that wrap around the inside door pillar, and rebend another 1/2" to get a proper fit. Otherwise the back surface angles out, ie. not perfectly straight with the rest of the cab.

You can wish in one hand and crap in the other.
See which one gets filled first.

I have a set of those cab corners lying around somewhere. I figured out that they were crap before I started and bought some Tabco corners from Scott's in Penhold. They need quite a bit of trimming at the edges but fit real real sweet. Most of the real crappy stuff in Canada comes from companies distributing product from Cross Canada. Avoid them like the plague unless you can confirm the brand they are going to send you.

I bought 2 67 repop fenders. Everyone told me they don't line up good and they are thin ect. ect. I hung them on my 68 they fit great and they are very sturdy I had no problems and $125 a piece you can't go wrong. Iwanted to shave the marker and had bad rust in both, so instead of alot of welding and patching , I simply hung the repops and love them. Saved me so much body work!!

Cross Canada supplies all the shops I know of.Think you can get their stuff through Canadian Tire now.Who else in Canada can you buy from?

They are just the new fenders that are out. New Tooling and Zink coated for better rust protection.
