Problems with timing on my 292

Picked up the complete motor out of a 1970 Chevy C10 farm truck. I went through the motor, cleaned it, painted it, and put everything back together.

The timing on the motor is suppose to be 4 degree BTDC. So last weekend I went to time the motor (I have the timing light with the adjustable dial on it) and once it was warm I was noticing there was no way I could get to 4 BTDC without the motor dying.

I have moved the teeth on the distributor forward and backward thinking maybe I was off a tooth. No matter what I do, the truck runs fine when it is timed at 20 Advance.

Before I start ripping this front end apart to see what it is I have a few questions for you gurus:

1). If I am not off on the distributor teeth, what would be the next thing to check?

2). I am sure I aligned the timing gears correctly, but I will have to doubt check that.

3) Is it possibly the balancer slipped on the rubber and has moved?

Thanks.
