Oh my, Denee007 or 007, are those swirl markings on the main carrier from the pinion gear touching it, if so, I'd say the engine miss saved you from making a trip that could have been disastrous.

I may have missed this earlier but, what gear ratio did this have?

I also am going to run a 3:08, and running a slightly larger diameter tire for the same reason, lower highway rpm and better gas mileage.

Hang in there, once this axle thing is all straightened out, you will be able to drive with the utmost confidence.

Actually I was backing out of the garage and it stopped, but was able to move forward enough to put it back up on the lift. Oh, it has a 3:08

Hello Denee007, Sorry to read about all the problems you're having with that rearend. But you already have a whole bucket full of "I did its" and this will be one more. The frustration is having the problem but the fun happens when you solve it. Keep up the great work. You're almost there, again. Really enjoy reading your posts and adventures of ???. No name yet. What do you call it the most? Good luck on that rearend.

You'll be up and running pretty quick. I love your new wheels and tires and wouldn't have a problem being real proud of that beautiful truck you own. I know Houston is one BIG city but how close to Galveston do you live?

Thanks!! Galveston? oh, we're just a hop skip and jump away from Galveston! or about an hour drive. We go there about once a month to eat at a place called Fish Tales. Good seafood!

My step dad lives in Hitchcock and we're planning on a trip after Christmas to see him. It would be nice if I could bring my wife and check out your truck during that week.

Wow, you just jogged a memory! The pic below is of Yours Truly! I had taken the day off of work to go to a track in Hitchcock! I didn't want to do the track alone, so I put out an SOs on a motorcycle forum, and one guy showed up with his father. Then it was a crappy short track. The first go around, the guy was ahead of me, and next thing I know, he was laid out in the middle of the track with his bike a ways from him. I didn't have a kick stand, so I went and told his dad. We got in the truck and drove out to him. We got him into the truck, he was in pain! I helped load everything and they left for the hospital.
I continued playing at the track until late, all by myself. First time I ever dragged my knee! Later, they called from the hospital. His name was Jeff, he broke his shoulder blade. Not long after I saw him at another track day completely healed!

The track in Hitchcock is now a bonafied track. I never went there. Thank you for bringing a super memory back! I had to hunt for the pic below~ it was self taken.

I wanted to get the bearing off of the carrier, so I went to HF and they had the tools below on Sale! (everything in HF is always on sale).

I think I bought this cause it is just so pretty of colors! My granduaghters going to love this!


I had to take the bearing cage off to get the inner race off. But worked well!

Good on you for having been so devoted to motors and motor sports over the years.

Does your grand daughter seem to have any interest in cars or bikes? Dan, thank you for bringing that up and recognizing the fact that anyone can do anything if they have the desire. Who set the standards for girls play with dolls and boys play with Tonka toys! It was probably commercializations dirty work and money making strategy! Look at men in the kitchen? there are probably more men executive chefs than women. So the kitchen isn't just for women, but I don't remember my dad ever helping in the kitchen. Gary comes in, asks me,"what's for breakfast? or what's for dinner? But if I want to eat healthy, I do need to make food!lol

I despise the stereotyping of I should be doing this, whereas my husband instinctively does that. However, my two girls, now 23 and 29, have never been interested in what's under the hood of a car, or how things work(regarding an automobile), but aren't most people like that? So when a person that has no sense of the machine their driving, but their brakes are squealing and have no clue what it is? No wonder mechanics can get into someone's wallet! or purse!
My father made sure that I took auto mechanics in high school, just like my brothers. Actually, I wasn't the only girl in the class(thank goodness). I think it should be mandatory that everyone take it, and they should have a plumbing class, and electrical class, to prepare for real world experiences that they will inevitably encounter.

When my precious grandaughter is here, which isn't very often anymore, they live a couple hours away. She'll play in the garage, so at that time I don't really do any work, or should I say play? Fun has a new meaning! Anyway, she'll find a bunch of old bolts/nuts, and start her little imagination going. She gets dirty and that's OK! I do make sure she has some crummy clothes on. I've bought her tools, though they were toys, they were functional metal tools, but "toys".

However, I guess there are dainty women, and girly girls that probably shouldn't be near a bench grinder! lol Heck, I don't know if I trust Gary with some of my more dangerous things in the garage or kitchen for that matter!

So, growing up on a "farm", no neighbors, may have proven to setup the stage for me. We had to fix the tractors, lawn tractors were always having to be fixed, frequent runs to the Hi-Lo, or Arien's lawn tractor store, and of course having to make things. We were always working on the barn, fences, those were good days! We all worked in the kitchen, we all worked outside. This scenario is rare, times have changed, modernization is here to stay, computers, cell phones, as neat as they are, I would go back to the old days for the simplicity.

You and I are of the same mind on this subject. I think it is so unfortunate that so many little girls directly or indirectly get the message that certain "things" aren't for them and little boys too. Along with those messages come sexism messages that I THINK most young parents today don't MEAN to perpetuate.

I like that you say its fine your grand daughter gets dirty playing with nuts & bolts. My ex; the mother of my now-30 and 32 year old son and daughter, was a great mom and she always wanted the kids to look neat as a pin. I did too, but I said as long as they look like they started the day neat and clean, I'm fine if they get dirty. They had to start the day bathed, clean clothes, hair combed, teeth brushed - dirty after that was just being a kid. What fun is it if you are never allowed to just play?

I love that you enjoy and work on your vehicles. It is an inspiration. I could not get either of my boys (or wife) to take an interest in anything I was working on. Now they just open their wallets like the rest of the population. My older son is 23 now and is just now figuring out what he missed. He still never comes around until he needs something though. Keep up the great work.

Hey, I got my parts for my rear axle! you know, all the gears and bearings? This morning I also received the axle perches too! I guess later today I'll work on grinding the old perch welds off and putting the new ones on. I have too much going on right now~ like a full service shop! lol, and we're going on vacation next week~

I still need to work on my axle perches and clean the housing very well before I call Dave Chapman of The Hollister Road Company. I want you to know that the old 90 wt is really a smelly nasty smell! I get nauseated going into my grrrrage! Probably be after our vacation before I can set up a time with Dave So close yet so far!

Oh that smell, can't ya smell that smell. It is a terrible smell.

I know it very well, I just pulled the axle shafts out of my axle, which meant draining the differential, stinky in the shop for a couple days.

Where did you get your parts, I've been using Randy's ring and pinion, just curious of other options, I've had great service so far.

Hi Jim! Dave Chapman, a member here helped find some parts online. He searched a couple places online but Rock auto had the best price of about 300. Other places were up to 700!
I was sure surprised at the difference in prices! Pays to shop!

I did open my garage a few minutes ago to let it air out. I probably should clean the axles really well or put them outside. The housing, Dave loaned me a large bristle brush to wash the insides of the axle tubes. I'd better do all this tomorrow or our garage will stink to high heaven when we get home from vacation!!!

denee if you want to smell something really bad, try Ford's friction modifier that they use in their limited slip rear ends. Nasty stuff. Hope you can work it out to see more of your grand daughter. I have 3, 2 girls and 1 boy. The oldest girl loves cars and would stay with me if she could. They're all good kids. Good luck on your rear end, the truck's that is.

This is nasty enough~ I really don't think I could fathom something smelling much worse, or raw sewer perhaps! As a grandparent, I guess I'm just gonna have to go get her now and then, but then she starts 1st grade, darn school!
Hey, at least your oldest girl is into cars! Time changes everyone, who knows, she may grow up to be like me! I'd like to think I could be a good role model!
