Help a new owner with a VIN

Hi!
Took me 6 months to find what i wanted and it was worth the search!!
Can i get some help with a VIN number.. I tryed google till i was exhausted, and i did find some usefull info on here but still not 100% sure whats goin on.
Vin is
ce131j641xxx

edited at user request

My concern is, the 3, it's correct on the title, and truck, NOT a typo..
someone sugested the 3 is because it was a special order and was bought
without a bed, just a cab and rails... is this correct?
Any help or info on this would be greatfull

Welcome to the site. I think you're right on that but I'm sure someone who knows for sure will chime in!

From your board name...I'm assuming you're going to bag this truck?

Re: Help a new owner with a VIN

probably shouldn't post you full vin on the INTERNET.

it a gmc right? if it was a 72 it would read 4, 8 , or 6 but thats a 71. the 3 means its a fleetside the 4 means it has a toolbox i think.
ill dig out my book and see what the 4 means. ill look up for janesville and see if there's any more variances with the vins.

Re: Help a new owner with a VIN

All of the places I am checking indicate a Chevrolet. GMC would have a model code in digits 4 and 5, and 31 is not one of those options. Of course it appears that 3 is not one of the options for the fourth digit on a Chevy. I have been wrong before...

ce131j

C = 2wd
E = V8
1 = 1/2 ton
3 = unsure??
1 = 1971
J = Janesville

I didn't help you any. Can you post the model number? It is on the SPID on the inside of your glove box door.

Edit: I am finding now that the 3 is indeed chassis and cab. There can't be too many 1/2 tons that came as cab and chassis, that is a unique truck!!

Re: Help a new owner with a VIN

the model code is 31 for a gmc or 4 for chevy. theres no variance for the 1/2 ton chevy p/u, but there is for the gmc (special/camper special/work truck).
i do have 3 for the 3/4 and 1 tons as cab and chassis for Chevrolet, but thats still a maybe on the 1/2 tons.

someone on here has the answer on hand or i'll find it in one these manuals . be patient. i've got a special order manual around here somewhere for that year and it'll have the variances. it's probably listed in the assembly guide too, but i cant find it either. im hoping the spawn didn't think they were coloring books again.

Re: Help a new owner with a VIN

for Chevrolet 1970 thru 1972
2-chassis-cowl.bus
3-chassis-cab
5-panel
6-carryall

gmc
02-flat face cowl-chassis only
03 cab-chassis
05-panel body
09-cab platform and stake rack

the assemble manual has no special purpose * associated with the chassis id number on the Chevrolet. they do however have an earmark on the service parts identification plate in the glove box.

Re: Help a new owner with a VIN

I was kinda sure the 3 was for a cab, chassis but wasn't 100%.
I am greatfull to have everyone verify i was correct!
Google is great for info, but there are times you need to speak to someone who really knows, like here!!
Thank You again
