starter swap

Has anyone on here done a starter swap from Original to a newer high torque mini starter with only the S terminal? From what i have found that the R terminal is needed for running points, which I still am. Have seen diode wire referenced and connecting it to the S terminal on the started in place of the missing R terminal. Anyone dealt with this. I already have the mini starter that was shop spare and would rather go to it for better performance and less weight.
