power steering box squeel
My power steering box squeals like crazy when I go to full lock. I don't have stoppers to keep it from bottom out on the box when I go to full lock. Do I need a new box or can I fix it some how. My searing also seams a little loose meaning if I hit a bump in the road my truck might turn a little and I don't feel it in the wheel and the oposit is true. I turn the wheel a little and the tires don't respond. The box is not vary old.

Don't go full lock. All old cars with power steering will squeal if you do that.

Re: power steering box squeel
It only happens when it is turned all the way to left or right. So if it is the belt, foes that mean that the pump starts struggling when it gets to full lock and causes the pulley drag and the belt to squeal, or something like that. Don’t take this as a sarcastic question I am just trying to figure it out

Re: power steering box squeel
Double check your pulley alignment on your power steering pump. Mine also would squeal horrendously at full lock from the day I bought it no matter how tight I got the belt & with a new belt. Turns out the power steering pump was at an angle / not as drastic as my back slash bar but at a slight angle like that. I couldn't get it straight with any adjustment and ended up cutting a slight wedge out of my power steering bracket & welding it back up. Now the power steering pump is perfectly square to the crank pulley and no more squeal at full lock. No telling just how many motors had been installed in the truck before I bought it.

Re: power steering box squeel
I took a look and it looks like the power steering pump pulley is crooked so I’m going to try and add a spacer to get it to be straight.

Re: power steering box squeel
Played with the alignment of the power steering pump bracket today and that cured the noise problem. Now I just have to figure out why my steering feels so loose.
