Nephews first truck

alright alight, found another one man think these things are starting to find me lol ok so as the title says this will be my nephew's first truck he's 13 time to really learn how to turn wrenches and what better then a c10 I have not told him yet I will on his birthday. so little back story my parents started a tradition where if us kids graduate we get titles to our vehicles mine was a 65 gmc which I sold and regretted but that's another story. alright so we had just picked this truck up a few weeks ago about 130 miles one way so what I know about the truck its a '76 step side the guy I got it from took the front suspension and rear-end out for his 63 gmc so he swapped the 63 stuff under the '76 so that's first thing on the list. had my nephew go with us to get the truck and help me clean it out and clean it up he's been non stop talking about this truck showing his mom pictures of trucks like it always asking me what we are doing to it next this will be fun

Re: Nephews first truck

so the plan is get try and find a rusted out long bed or junkyard to replace the factory suspension and rearend then I have a 307 and a 4 speed we will swap in for him to learn how to drive then as it goes on we will help him find and build a 350 and find a 5 speed

Re: Nephews first truck

I think it's cool that you took him along to go pick up the truck, and that he wanted to go! Let alone that you would give it to him and help him with it. Very cool. Good uncle. I hope you guys have a great time with this and keep us posted.

Re: Nephews first truck

alright now we have parts form the donor scattered all over the shop time to bring in the stepside to get them all back into one spot. it was a little bit of a challenge to get the truck into the shop since the frontend was only held in by one bolt on each side not even in the correct mounting holes and no steering linkage sucked aswell as did the rearend only had a strap holding it in place well kinda. let me tell ya that was the easiest frontend removal ever haha

Re: Nephews first truck

alright so we had swapped the front and rear into the truck an had to move it to the other bay so it was nice to get it out in the light and see it at ride height even without engine an trans once we moved it over had my nephew clean the engine up a little we swapped doors then installed the engine transmission then front end followed it went together super quick. yes I would have liked to cleaned everything an paint but we are pressed on time as he lives in a split house hold its hard to get shop time with him so we are doing what we can without tying up the shop either.

Thumbs up Subscribed

Very nice ! .

This is a great way to teach kids responsibility as well as useful skills .

I remember dragging an abandoned '59 Ford out of the mud in 1968 and setting to work on it...

You're a great uncle and this young man will benefit from your doing this .

Post Nephews First Truck

It really matters not if he decided he likes it or not, it appears he / you live on a farm and there's much useful knowledge to be gained by this project .

If nothing else, he'll learn weather or not he'll be happy living and working with his hands....

I tired of pulling t*ts and shoveling sh*t the *instant* I discovered I had natural ability to keep 1930's John Deer tractors running, I used what I learned on a dairy farm to create and entire life for my self as a Journeyman Mechanic .

He could grow up to be a Farmer, Carpenter, Musician, Engineer, whatever, your taking the time to teach him the basics is very good, I wish I could get my Foster boys out of the city and onto a Farm...

Re: Nephews first truck

thanks man an yes I love to share knowledge and to see kids get excited about something they did no matter what it is trucks music sports ect. and we don't exactly live on a farm my dad owns 2 acres in here in Idaho I own 1 acre so theres plenty of room for projects an learning how to drive or even archery shoot. we used to live in a town called Caldwell an well it ended up getting over run by soo many ppl moving here from other states which is fine but you could live anywhere there wasn't an hoa and well we got tired of it so we moved to a little town of 3500 ppl soo much better.

What a great Uncle! I came from a split home myself and I wish my uncle was around enough to help me do this since my Dad wasn't. Great work buddy. I hope the kid enjoys his truck!

Re: Nephews first truck

Agreed with everyone else,
Awesome that you are taking the time to teach him and spend time, he may not enjoy it much now. Later down the road he will have found memories.
I just helped my son buy his first rog, and doing the same as you are with your nephew.
Let us know if you need any random parts, I would donate a set of spark plugs or something similar
