700r4 on a stock auto crossmember?

Can a 700R4 bolt on to a stock automatic crossmember or would it better to go with a CPP crossmember?
Thanks!

you can use the stock one. Relocate it and drill holes.

Re: 700r4 on a stock auto crossmember?

i agree with longhorn man i just had to relocate mine & drill 4 new holes. i was able to use 4 existing holes. it was pretty simple. i took my original & had it powder coated, i think it was is cheaper then buying a new one. although i agree that the cpp ones look very good as well.

good luck!

Re: 700r4 on a stock auto crossmember?

alot cheaper to use stock crossmember//in all the years of having classic vehicle i've found that about 1 in 50,000 people that look at them will actually crawl under them to see what my crossmembers look like

Honestly, I would think that 30 - 40 is too much for a greasey used piece... however, i know for a fact that these suckers are getting hard to find in wrecking yards in this part of the world. (ohio)

Re: 700r4 on a stock auto crossmember?

I JUST was trying to get one of these out at the wrecker on friday & the bolts in there are rusted solid! I couldnt get that x-member out of there to save my life. I had a revelation there under the truck - "Screw this!" The little voice said to me, "...dig out some 2" by 3" tubing, a bit of plate & make your own!" It cant be that hard. I'll post pics when it's done...

Re: 700r4 on a stock auto crossmember?

well i found a new CPP crossmember on ebay for $70 shipped i think thats a good price, so if i can get it for that i think i will. That will get me one step closer to getting this project moving.
and i think (in a while) i will make a build thread of this crazy project that i have learned a lot on.

Re: 700r4 on a stock auto crossmember?

You just need to purchase the correct linkage and a different indicator from what I've read. And you'll be able to keep your stock column.

I'll hopefully be doing this swap to my '72 in the future.

Re: 700r4 on a stock auto crossmember?

A lot of people are using Lokar items... (tv cable and things).

I was just on ECE's (Early Classic Enterpriese) website and they are offering a kit (transmission crossmember and all the linkage and parts needed). I have never used this kit, but these guys know what they are doing. I'm planning on ordering from them in the near future.

Re: 700r4 on a stock auto crossmember?

I used the stock linkage on a 72 GMC I put a 700 in a few years ago. It worked great. I put it in place of a 400. I'd say just get the indicator the adjust the linkage at the bottom of the column and it will work.

Re: 700r4 on a stock auto crossmember?

Go with Kugel Komponents linkage, You can get it for $50 at www.truckandcarshop.com I have a 700 R4 trans coupled to a stock 350 and am using it You can also get the overdrive indicator and this linkage is adjustable so that it will line up correctly. It is VERY easy to install and will save you a TON of headaches. You might be able to get it on Feebay cheaper. It is very similar to Lokar and is made in America.

Re: 700r4 on a stock auto crossmember?

You will also notice that I have no indicator, as I broke it when I removed the housing to replace the bulb. But, prior to that, it did line up perfectly and I was able to dial it in and shift all the way down into 1st gear

Thank you for your pic! The linkage in the ECE pic you posted IS the Kugel Komponents linkage...or if it is not, it is identical. The slotted arm (very lower right hand corner of your pic) that attaches to the transmission allows you to adjust shift throws and that is why you are able to dial in your shift indicator. It also only has two pivot points, and it will eliminate ALL of the slop you may have in your factory linkage. You will also be able to adjust your neutral safety (backup lights) switch so that it continues to function properly.

Here are some pics of it installed on my truck:
