vortec roller 350

wondering who has swapped in a vortec 350 crate motor, changed gear drive on existing HEI? what brand of fuel pump, electric? would like to keep my 72 belt setup, a/c alt. p/s. I know a serpentine drive is nice, but i'm already setup. A new motor hopefully is a long time away, but i can read the writing on the wall, currently running non syn 10w30 with a bottle of lucas TB zinc additive,no issues with that, but a roller setup would be nice. Thanks, what few posts i have sent, everyone is helpfull, thats why I'm still here.

Re: vortec roller 350

I have a L31 engine in my 1967 C10. Yes I did change the drive gear on the HEI. It was easy, just drive out the roll pin and replace. Just make note which way the rotor was pointing before you take it out. I have a 5 psi electric fuel pump on mine wired to a keyed on spot in the fuse block along with a motion switch and a manual switch.

I used an aftermarket HEI with a hardened gear, but I also kept my Vortec distributor gear in case I wanted to go back to a factory HEI. I like the Wagner fuel pumps. Wiring the fuel pump through a fuel pressure switch is good insurance in case of an accident.

Re: vortec roller 350

I did not have a belt set up when I installed mine so I got the GMPP serpentine belt kit. I then had to change out the power steering pump outlet fitting to fit the older english sized hose fitting.

I used inertia switch part number FV7 mounted under the dash and fuel pump part number SP1130.

I believe you meant to say an oil pressure switch.

Re: vortec roller 350

I recently completed an L-31 swap and old school as I am I stuck with traditional V belts. I also used the balancer that came with the crate engine, if you modify the crank position sensor that is sandwiched between the balancer and crank snout and use it as a washer, you can even use your old metal timing cover and the pulleys all line up nicely.
