350 tranny with overdrive

I found a 350 tranny with overdrive. How will this compare to the 700r4 tranny?

Re: 350 tranny with overdrive

Maybe you are thinking of a 350 with a lockup converter. They did make those for a couple of years.

Re: 350 tranny with overdrive

Yeah its a 350 with a lock up converter which kinda acts like an overdrive from what I'm being told...Heck I know nothing about it...I was hoping the tranny wizzards on here would know something....

Re: 350 tranny with overdrive

The lockup will make very little difference from what I've been told so I bought a 700

Look for a big '87-'89 Caprice Classic, or the same vintage 2wd pickup (even the 4.3L S-10's had them, but I don't know what year they started with the electric speedo. They should all have a 700R4 with the mechanical speedo. The older versions aren't as good (so I've heard)

Make sure that set up the TV cable on the 700r correctly and buy a lockup kit for it or you'll burn the tranny up in a hurry.

A TH350C which you were refering to makes no differance really. Your better off continuing to search for a 700R4

Re: 350 tranny with overdrive

take a look at a 200-4R. it's a easier swap from a turbo350 then to a 700R4 is.

Re: 350 tranny with overdrive

the TH350C is still a one to one final drive ratio. A non lockup verion is one to one, with about 200 RPM slippage. The lock up gets rid of that. You'll see little MPG chainge, if you see any at all.
I'd bet my next 3 paychecks that you wouldn't see any MPG improvements at all.

And built right they are stronger and there are a lot more parts available for them.

Re: 350 tranny with overdrive

I just put in a 200R with lock up and it works great.... maybe too great.

I'm thinking of having a toggle switch to shut off the lock up as it lugs the motor when going 35-45 (won't down shift unless I really put my foot in it or tap the break). I drove the first few days without the lockup hooked up and it drove around town better (downshifting with less throttle).

It's cheaper than the 700r as it has the same gear ratio as a 350T except for the OT (the 700r has a lower first gear). I don't have a big HP motor so I'm not worried. Though it was built by a shop that builds them up for Buick Grand Nationals to do the quarter mile.

Re: 350 tranny with overdrive

i had a 2004r in my '85 s-10 blazer with a V8 swap. don't know the miles but i put that thing through hell. i'd manually shift it at the track and never before 5k, as far as i know it's still driving around just fine.
