1968 Chevy Truck 2 Ton Crew Cab (Rare Vehicle)

Found on CL. I have never seen one, and Mods, IT IS NOT MINE, I have no stake in it. Just thought it was interesting and wanted to share.

That's awesome, I love the medium duty trucks from this era. Just a proper burb-door build and a long bed and it's ret-to-go

Did they come with a long bed? I presumed a dump or flat bed or something utility, It would be cool with a long bed.

very interesting, never seen one like that before. The 40 and up series never came with a bed like from a pickup... flat beds or dump beds or boxes...ect.
Way off topic...
texanidiot.... I never noticed the siggy quote! sweet!

Doesn't look like a factory job. More like a custom job. I would think the factory would've used a 'burb door setup to eliminate big blind spotsbetween the doors. Neat though. Make a cool rollback hauler!

Cool Truck. It would look sweetwith a long bed and stepside fenders for the dually fenders.

yota, there was no real factory style... but this was a converson done by a gm authorized distributor.... just like the decked out converson vans sold on GM's dealer lots.
It's the real deal.

Re: 1968 Chevy Truck 2 Ton Crew Cab (Rare Vehicle)

Well why would they use front doors? Why not the rear doors off a burb? I have built a few crew cabs and currently have a custom '72 longbed, which now sports a shortbed extended cab. It just doesn't make sense to me. I'm not saying it's not original, but I just don't get it.

I would have to guess that they used front doos because they were more common. Also, there was no left rear door on the Suburbans, and maye they wanted four doors.

Re: 1968 Chevy Truck 2 Ton Crew Cab (Rare Vehicle)

these doors were in the invintory. The converson company just tells GM to deliver it with 2 extra doors, and they'd take care of the rest. Look on International med duty trucks.... they are still doing the exact same thing today.
As for the back window, the small window ramained well into the mid to late 70s on the med duty.

I never thought of that but you are right. International and Freightliner are still using the front doors as rear doors.

Re: 1968 Chevy Truck 2 Ton Crew Cab (Rare Vehicle)

I remember this truck was shown here for sale a couple years ago.I know of two companies that built these cabs,Scott-bilt and The Alton Company.
These trucks were employee driver company fleet vehicles, not stylin`cruisers. These were "crew" cabs with the sole purpose of hauling more "crew".The added expense of this custom coachwork needed to be kept to a minimum. The used off the shelf doors for economy.
I have a friend with a Napco like that.Medium duty trucks don`t come with any bed. They are cab & chassis models.About anything you can imagine could have gone on the back depending on the buyer`s intended use.

Now what I would do with that is take that cab off and put a 70 GMC suburban body on that with the single wide tire setup front and rear. It would no doubt require the frame to be cut, but, it would be cool. Or convert it to the big truck GMC folding hood front with a suburban cab blended into it.

Man if I had the cash id be on my way to get that thing. It would be sweet with a Detroit Diesel and a 10 speed in it. Throw a long bed with a set of stepper fenders grafted to it.

IMO your best bet to build a cab like that would be to take a cab and split it in two, and then cut the corresponding section out of a suburban and graft it in between, and then make the roof lines between the cab halfs match. There would be a ton of fab work to do though because you would have to make the 4th door, and the pieces of the B pillar on the drivers side from scratch.

It is a pretty intensive job, like 2-300 hours.

As andy said, the small window was used until the late seventies (maybe longer) on the med. duty.
I don't think you could get a large window on a 67-72, c-40 to c-60. Not positive however.
