one odd question one normal one...

The odd one...
How long of a coil wire can I get away with running?

The not so odd one...
Does someone make an adapter to go from the horseshoe type to the pedestal type carrier bearing?

Thanks in advance.

#1. Depends on the size of wire you are running....

#2. You can use either carrier bearing on your driveshaft, you just have to change the frame mounting bracket.

1. Haven't bought wires yet, mainly want firewall clean. I was thinking about putting it on the core support somewhere but am worried it might be too long.
2. I have the Porterbuilt cross member that is already drilled for the horseshoe style. Just wondering if there is some kind of adapter plate because I saw a cool billet pedestal style one.

If you use 8 gauge you should be fine. Make sure you use a fuse. Can't you just drill 2 new holes for the pedestal type?

A fuse? I'm talking about the wire from the center of the distributer to the coil.

I'll probably just drill a couple holes. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Run an HEI and forget the coil wire. It'll clean up your engine bay even more than the core support mounting.

Im pretty sure a HEI won't fit for my setup. Maybe one of the small Mallory ones but I'm not even sure about that. I have the pro-billet, mechanical advance one because I think it the smallest one out there. I could be wrong though, its happened once.

Re: one odd question one normal one...

A buddy of mine just shared this with me...

a coil will keep charging to a higher and higher Kv till it can over come whatever the total resistance is....(so there is no voltage drop)

when volts goes up...amps goes down so the actual spark "kernel" will be a tiny tiny bit less "robust"....

I'm 95%+ sure you will not have any problems or performance loss...use a good quality spiral wound wire of about 1,000ohms per ft or less

if you do detect a misfire.....close the plug gap by just .001 (ex:.045 to .044 would be from about 18Kv down to 17Kv typically).... so the coil will have to build to a lot less Kv with less gap... than.... the longer higher resistance coil wire added

Re: one odd question one normal one...

I'll take a stab at question 2..
Making an adapter plate is fairly easy..
You already have the hole pattern for the horseshoe type, and if you purchase the billet one, you'll have that too.

Keep the plate thin enough to retain the stance of the driveshaft, and thick enough to take the load.. 1/4" plate aluminum would do, and is easily cut and tapped.
(Steel would be better, and you can go slightly thinner, but you still need it thick enough to retain several threads of a bolt)

A note on the aluminum, go to a metal supply company and ask for either 2024, or 7075.. these are both aircraft grades of aluminum and will take a lot of punishment.

A few careful measurements and it'll work fine..

I've made several similar custom pieces over the years in the machine shop, and this should be a relatively easy piece.
