Well...I just got the original bench seat re-upholstered and figured I'd take the plunge and start this as my build thread. I chose a color close to the original and told him to make it look like it belongs in a truck from that era. New foam, etc. I haven't posted a lot, but plan on doing more as I make progress on the truck

I have the bed off and the rally wheels on now and I just bought some IPE decking for the flat bed that will end up on it eventually. I plan on adding some boxes to mount underneath for storage, blazer gas tank, etc. Basically I want to end up with a functional work truck when all is said and done

o.k. so my neighbor helped me out replace my front brakes (4 wheel drum). We replaced everything except the wheel cylinders and springs. We were going to look at the rear drums so that I could take pics and make sure I picked up all of the parts before we started. I guess the question is...how do you get the rear drums off? I'm a carpenter/furniture builder (neighbor is more the mechanic) and they weren't coming off. Is there a trick to it? Do you need some kind of drum puller? I don't know

I bought the drums and wheel cylinders today because he said he could help me tomorrow. I just wanted to have everything ready for install so I wasn't making trips back and forth to the parts store.

Anything else I should be aware of?

If Sammy is the co-pilot....is the rear parking brake off? I've done that with my buddy in a bottle before. I've also had the rear drums worn enough, like everyone else, to where it makes a groove in the drum and you have to back off the star adjuster to get them off....Mikey

lol...yeah he's the co-pilot, but not that day or today even. I'm a woodworker and don't know what the hell I'm doing. I count on my neighbor to teach me some things, but he just starts tearing things apart and has them put back together before I know what the hell happened...I end up just being a helper...fetching tools and what not

I don't remember seeing a whole in the back of the drum to adjust the shoes. When we did the fronts...we adjusted, put the drums on...spun it and kept taking the drums off and adjusting more if it needed it. So, maybe the shoes are stuck in a groove on the drum?

*edit* oh yeah...the emergency brakes don't work and the cable is kinda rigged. I'll check that to make sure that's not holding anything up.

ok...I went to the garage and looked at my arsenal of tools (mainly construction realated) and found a BFPB. *** ****** Pry Bar. I got the drum off

We're going to do the MC and the rubber hoses tomorrow as well...I guess we'll tear it apart in the AM and then I'm off to pick everything up.

Thanks...it was the closest to the stock color I could find. I'm in the process of painting all of the parts on the back half of the truck. Nuts, bolts, u-bolts, trailing arms, etc. All new bushings are going in...some HD springs, Rancho 9000XL shocks, and the rear for those who don't already know is a 3.73 posi-trac rear. I just got it back from the shop and it has all new bearings, seals, etc. I can't wait to get it back together so I can do the same to the front

Lookin' good, keep pluggin' away at it. Oh yeah, brake jobs are always fun! I had to literally grind the bolts off that held my wheel cylinders on, they were so rounded off I couldn't get a wrench on 'em. The front drums were rusted to the shoes from the truck sitting still for 5 yrs. Fun,Fun, FUN!!!!!

Yeah...I like coming home after work and doing a couple little things on it. On one of my regular days off I try to get out for at least 1/2 a day if not the whole day and make some progress. Little by little she's gettin there. Oh yeah...that's one of the things that fun about these old trucks...they challenge you every once in awhile and you have to figure out what to do

My tidbit for you and nieghbor. The adjuster hole is in the drum on these trucks not the backing plate. You can see it in the old drum. If you look close there is a knockout in the new drum.

Just got the trailing arms back from the shop. I had an excuse to buy a new tool too!

Picked up a grinder to smooth things out a little bit before painting them.

*Rustoleum red primer (2 coats)

*Eastwood's Chassis Black (Satin, 2 coats)

Here is a pic. of the rear axle. After I'm done with the trailing arms...this is next in line for paint.

Picked up the shocks today...Rancho 9000XL's. Can't comment on the ride yet

I should have the back of the truck back together in a couple of weeks and will take pics of everything put back together

o.k. I took a wire wheel to the rear axle today prepping it for paint...once it's clean is the primer gonna stick or should I rough it up a little bit more i.e. 80-100 grit sandpaper. The housing cleaned up well, but it ended up shinier than I thought it would.

Yeah...I need to post the pics back up. I deleted my photobucket account. I'll find a host and get things going here again. Right now everything is on hold until the fall. 7 days before CNM started in January I decided to go back to school after a loooong vacation. Soon! It's so close!
