Power Steering Problem

Hey, I have a 1985 Chevy C10 2wd 305

My problem is I need a new high pressure power steering line for my power steering pump, BUT the pump isnt the stock one from my truck.

I thought the pump was from a 1982 c10 2wd 250 but I ordered that line from lmc and it's not right. Also the truck I got the pump from now has a 350, so I dunno if that matters.

What I need to know is what truck came stock with a regular flare on the pump side of the line, and a bubble flare on the steering column side.

The line I ordered was 32-1975, and now I don't know which one to get, because Im thinking the pump may have been swapped before that.

Hi Adam,

I don't think any of these trucks came stock with that combination. They used the same style of connections at both the pump & steering box from the factory.

I believe the changeover took place in 1980. So 73-79 were all regular flare. And 80-87 are all O-ring with the beaded "flare".

You'll either have to have a custom hose made up. Use an adapter fitting on one end. Or better yet, swap to the correct style of pump for your 85 (ie. a pump with the O-ring port)

Agree... its one or the other... what you have is a custom hose...

Nope its easier than that. Go the junkyard and find a truck that matches the steering box you have. Pull the pressure hose out of the pump. The unscrew the 1 inch nut fitting that the hose screws into. The fitting interchange for almost all years of saginaw pumps but the lines were different. I would bet somebody could mail you one for dirt cheap. theres no need to have a custom hose made.

Cable Guy, yeah I wish I could do that but the wrong end is the one on the pump, not the box, I have an 85 pump but it leaks, which is what started this problem, what can I do to fix my leaky pump?

You can do it. The fitting where the pressure line screws into the pump comes out of the pump. The box side your stuck with. You need to just make them match. It doesnt matter which is which just make them match. Then you can get a line for either the earlier or later style. Where is the pump leaking from? The pump itself comes out of the reservoir housing theres a big o ring around the front and a couple small gaskets around the bolt holes and the pressure fitting.
