It's been a couple of months now and I am looking to see if any have surfaced. Just need a good core for rebuilding and putting back on my 402.
Thanx all and Happy 2K4!!

How do you tell the differance between a BB and SB Q-jet?

I bought a 72 with a 402 in it a few months ago. PO replaced carb but gave me two Q-jets with it. If you can tell me how to identify a BB carb I'll let you know what I have.

Thanks.

Scott

I will get the numbers that I need and post them. The Chevy carbs start with 704 then the year 1,2,3 so a typical 1972 BB carb is (truck) 7042210. These have the divorced style choke (the rod that comes up from the thermostat spring in the intake manifold)
If this helps. Thanx for the posts guys!

One way to tell the BB from the SB is the linkage on the throttle side of the carb. BB carbs were not set up with the extended arm that the T-350 kick down cable connects to. I am using a BB carb off of a 72 402 on my 67 small block with T-350. I had to drill a hole in the linkage to mount the sliding bracket in it. Then I found out that it doesn't move far enough to make the tranny kick down when I want it to. Even shortining the slotted end of the kick down cable. It also seem to run too rich for a small block!! WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Well, I have a 4-speed so the linkage is not needed. As usual, thanx for the tips, Wes!

The reason I ask is I didn't think there was any differance between BB and SB on Chevys....they are all 750 cfm. I know GM made some bigger ones but I think they just came on Caddies and such. Gm used the same primary jets/rods on millions of applications by just changeing the float level and the secondary can be changed in seconds. This is all just FYI for anyone reading....I guess what I am trying to say is the carb you want may well be sitting on a smallblock...I have several...post those numbers

You are correct, Mr. Hand (remember "Fast Times At Ridgemont High"?...LOL) anyway they were mostly all 750 cfm. The 800 CFM units were (correct me if I am wrong here folks) on the later 4ME(not 4MV) units. I know that he rods/jets/hangers were the usual changed out pieces in the different app's but I am hoping to get a carb with the right jets and rods so I don't have to hunt them down. I guess I could get the ones out of my existing carb but then I have twice the work. Not that it is a big deal but I am getting too lazy in my old age. I was looking at the Jet carbs and the rebuilt "performance" pieces but I can build and re-bush a good core carb for a fraction of the cost of the other guys' rebuilt units! I don't want an Edelbrock carb nor a Holley. I tried them both and they ran like s**t! I did'nt feel like endless tinkering around with the Edelbrock to get rid of the inherent flat spots and the Holley was a gas pig! The Q'jets are usually more forgiving and are easier to tune.

I have several original BB Qjets that are complete and unmolested.

Well,
I am able to get the numbers for a 1972 model year that come straight from my factory service manual.
The carbs are: 7042206, 7042207, 7042218 & 7042219
Thanx!
