Re: Changing an Ignition Lock Cylinder

Okay, I think I've got the cylinder fixed--good ol WD-40. I'm wanting to tighten the bezel before i put the dash back in.
Oldblue, are you saying to tighten the bezel by tapping it clockwise?
Thanks for the help,
Joe

Thanks, found it. I'm going to go ahead and replace everything. I've used a pen and paperclip to push in but it doesn't seem to be spring loaded--it's not coming off.

Re: Changing an Ignition Lock Cylinder

turn it to accesory position, put paperclip into hole and push spring while turning farther to the left (counter clockwise) and pull with key.

you can tighten or loosen bezel with screwdirver or you buy a special tool pretty cheap.

I'm stuck on supid today and this thing is kicking my butt! Is it the little pin hole that is right next to the key hole or is it the hole that is on the side of the cylinder thats inside the dash?

An old thread but very helpful. If any of you are still on this forum, thanks. This was not necessarily easy but a whole lot easier thanks to your advice.

Re: Changing an Ignition Lock Cylinder

Cool! I just bought a new lock set today and was going to search to see how to do this! Im going to try doing the doors first. My ignition is fine, but just my doors that are almost impossible to lock and unlock. Hopefully there is a thread of swapping out door locks somewhere..

Short version is: Remove door handle and window crank & remove door panel. The lock cylinders are held in the door by a spring clip inside the door. The spring clip has a tab that sticks up to have something to grab to remove and replace it. It just slides into grooves at the top & bottom of the lock cylinder but will many times be stuck because of dirt & rust. Spray them with penetrating oil before you try to remove them. Small water pump pliers work good to remove the clips. I recommend wearing gloves to do this because it can be a knuckle buster. If you roll the window down you can take a flashlight and look down inside the door at the back of the glass. You can see the back of the lock cylinder and the clip that holds it in. There is a right and left lock pawl so don't get them mixed up.

Check this thread out also...

Re: Changing an Ignition Lock Cylinder

Will this same method work for a 1961 Chevy C10? There is no accessory position.
Thank you

Thank you

If I remember correctly the '61 has a separate start button does it not. If so, you would turn the key to the right to the "on" position then insert the straightened wire or paper clip to depress the retaining pin. Then turn the key farther to the right to remove the cylinder. This is the opposite direction from the '67-'72's. I would unhook the battery before doing this.

Any problems let us know.

Lockdoc, thanks for the reply. There is no separate start button but as soon as my new ignition lock cylinder arrives, I will give your instructions a try.

If there is a start position in the switch then it would remove just like the '67-'72's....

Re: Changing an Ignition Lock Cylinder

The lock cylinder went in with very little problem. You stick the paper clip in the hole and turn the cylinder it to the left while pulling on the cylinder. It will eventually work its way out. Place the new cylinder in the same position as the old cylinder came out and turn to the right. Thanks for the help.

No problem on the help. Technically you should turn the cylinder all the way to the left "Before" you insert the paper clip and push the spring loaded pin down, then it should turn to the left a little more and pull out.
