Re: How fast can I go!!

If you have just gotten it running it's probably a tuning issue.

I bottled it at 80, the thought of stopping from anything faster with manual drums had part of my anatomy going 1 pence 10 pence 1 pence 10 pence.

Re: How fast can I go!!

I've hit 100+ on the on ramp, but let off to merge with traffic.

Granted, mine isn't no stock 350 anymore.

Re: How fast can I go!!

I had a worn out old 292 inline in a 1967 C10 waaayyyy back when. I rapped that thing out to 100 MPH a few times... had a 4.10 rear end in it... I know I was well past 4,000 RPM's. That engine held together just fine.

I've done that once. I figured about 130 because the speedo was off about 10%. Scared the crap out of me. No sway bar and it was bouncing from ditch to ditch. Exactly once was enough for me.

[QUOTE=caminokid;4071225]If you listen to the motor...and it sounds like it is being stressed, that is when you let off. Most of my vehicles dont have tachs. Never blew one cause of no tach. Just listen to your motor.

I know the feeling. When I was out yesterday before I loaded it with tree branches and the ol lady wrecked our car....at 102 I had 50/50 thing going on in my head...50% said I was safe cause I rebuilt the front end...50% said I was going to die if I didnt get my foot out of the radiator.

Re: How fast can I go!!

Well I have had my 'off the subject of helping him fix his truck' doing over a hundred and it has the original hampster..I did replace his wheel tho.

Have a student mash the pedal to the floor (motor NOT running) and you get the ol flash light and look down the carb to make sure the throttle is opening all the way..or if ya look on the side of carb you can watch the linkage for the secondaries..it should turn about 90 degrees when floored. Let us know what you find out.
Does the truck have a tach???
If you answer the questions we ask it really helps us help you.

Re: How fast can I go!!

No tack, auto tranny.
I'll try your advice on the linkage when I get my son around to hold down the pedal.
Would the linkage also be turned all the way? Like does it stop at 90 degrees? (when fully opened?) I had my carb professionally rebuilt.

Re: How fast can I go!!

success, I still have a 1/4 turn after my pedal is pushed to the floor. I was relieved to see this as this is likely the easy fix, not sure how to fix it just yet, any suggestions?

Re: How fast can I go!!

about only having 8* in your timing plate, get a timing light that has an advance knob. 8* is not ideal

the knob delays the indicated timing by the amount you want. Say you need 12* timing but your dampener only shows up to 8*. Set the knob on the light to 4* and it will light up when the dampener is at 8*

Re: How fast can I go!!

like it has been mentioned you need to check because 81 is very slow..when I had the 307 in my truck with a three speed on the tree I buried the needle to where it would not go any more for at least two miles while driving to my shop to rebuild the whole truck I wanted to see if I could blow the motor but she ran and ran....I am sure I was over 95mph because I had one of my guys following me on a new truck in case she blew up and he said we were way over 95...

Well, as soon as I get the SBC and the rebuilt suspension and new tires, I'll try it again. I'm not doing anything to this poor 6 cylinder except maybe selling it.

Re: How fast can I go!!

ARE YOU TRYING TO GET A TOW HOME AND 7 DAY LIC SUSPENSION ? Any faster than 150km on the hwy and you truck gets inpounded. If your truck is a 72 you need to get a custom hrottle cable. one you can cut to length lokar makes one and performance improvements carrys them.

Re: How fast can I go!!

Mario I have a NOS cable from Bills trucks. I'm sure it is correct however not sure about the carb bracket. I didn't think it mattered as long as it held the cable. Not sure about the pedal itself.
