New Baby Makes Two!!

Look what I got today! I've gotta be crazy! I'll admit it before the Ex gets a chance to tell me. Its a 69 SWB with a 68 front clip. The second letter in the VIN is S but it has a V8 in it now. I haven't even had a chance to rifle through it yet but it does have at least 3 benches in the bed and one looks to be a torn up Highlander bench. Plans for it are just like my 67...get it running, driving and reliable and nicer looking. We'll see where it goes from there. If I decide to sell it I'll give VA72C10 first dibs. I don't know if he'll want it but he needs/deserves a Driver. I'll post pics and then Ima run outside and start diggin!

Re: New Baby Makes Two!!

I hear ya on that one Shawn but its storage for a minute.

Speaking of storage I did rumage through the stuff that was included with it and found two fold over benches and one fixed one. The one is indeed a Highlander seat. Not that it makes it worth anything. I found the inner shaft for the column that was included with my other truck. I found a driver's window vent that looks in pretty good shape, a 7 hole (non tach) cluster, various lenses, headlight buckets, arm rests, some CST/10 and 350 badges. I've gotta go through all these parts so I can decide wht to sell off. Looked like its start to rain so I had to pack up before I got caught in it.
The engine compartment had a later model rad cover in it that had a 400/2bbl emissions sticker on it. Seems the engine matches so thats a good thing. I poured some gas down the carb and was able to get it to run on that with no scary noises. And it continues...

Re: New Baby Makes Two!!

Yes I am. I had intended to make it a driver and sell it. But like I said VA72C10 gets first dibs. Iknow he wants a shorty fleet. I dont know if he'll want this one but I'm gonna give him first crack at it. It does have some body issues but from what I've seen of your work thats of little concern to you.

Looks like a good driver with little work! I'll be in touch

I do need a good extra engine stand right now ( used tire ) so don't throw that extra one out...lol...my engine is already using the stand and I have another on the way...

Re: New Baby Makes Two!!

ITS ALIVE! ALIVE!! I rebuilt the carb this weekend. Replaced the spark plugs and added two quarts of ATF and it moved under its own power! Its always a great feeling to bring one back from the dead. I was able to get it straightened up in the driveway so it wouldn't look so bad. Still a lot of sortin' to do. The next missions are brakes and fuel tank.

Re: New Baby Makes Two!!

I'd hang onto the topper JUST in case you sell it to one of us lucky bastages in CA - that will save us a hundred bucks on the registration, believe it or not. Without a cap, any truck, including an old classic even with a bed with zero scratches on its shiny paint is considered a "commercial" vehicle... Because threoretically we could actually hauls something for $. Now how dumb is that I ask you? Welcome to CA. Ok, I'm done.
And cool truck by the way, that is a GREAT starting point for a very cool end point.

Re: New Baby Makes Two!!

You sure it's a 69, maybe a late build 68 and 69 title?

Looks like it has some potential ! Wood bed or metal? Jonathan, you need it man!

I'm starting to think you may be right about the '68 thing. It does have the pull handle ebrake with no provisions in the firewall for a pedal style ebrake not to mention the gauge cluster has the wipers over the headlight switch in the cluster. The VIN says its a 69 so the investigation continues. Its a metal bed.

Jocko, everytime I hear something new about CA, it just gets weirder!

Re: New Baby Makes Two!!

Also -- you might look a bit closer at the parchment bench, it's possible it came from a Super. (?) I think they had the inserts like that... not sure. Jonathan would know.

Nick, From the pic of the vin plate, It doesn't look like the rivets are roseheads.

I don't think it will be a problem but I do think further investigation is called for.

that's a houndstooth or cloth bench so not a highlander (it's more of a large plaid pattern)...might have been from a super or just a re-upholstery job....

I didn't catch the rivets before....looks like it may have been a 68 that was pieced together and got a good title/vin plate from a donor...

....that being said...in VA...you walk into DMV with the old signed title and walk out with the new one and registration without them ever looking at the truck at all....so no issues there...out of state sale might be a different story depending on the state....

probably worth it at this point to look under the cab for the frame vin and see if they match....I'm guessing at this point it'll be different...

Re: New Baby Makes Two!!

I like the emblem over the radio...those are actually worth something and usually are found on glovebox doors...

Is there a spid sheet in the glovebox?

Re: New Baby Makes Two!!

Yeah, the spid is on the gb door but its been painted over black like the rest of the inside. I was gonna see if I could clean it up without ruining it so that I could learn more about the truck.

many times there is the plastic cover over...if this is the case it should be easy to strip the paint off w/out hurting the spid....also could try to take the bench out and see if there is a build sheet there...

Re: New Baby Makes Two!!

I'll check it out but as you know I have bigger fish to fry at the moment. The truck had some import buckets in it but came with the three benches. I'll check them for a build sheet.

Re: New Baby Makes Two!!

Congrats on the "new baby" ! looks like a pretty solid one to build. Im thinking the frame vin between the steering gear and control arm would be easier to see than the one under the cab. Thats no real prob here in Ok either. As long as there is a vin on the cab its good enough for our DMV. Cant wait to see some progress on this one.

I got a title on Saturday! Easiest trip to DMV I ever had! Seems Obama was in town and everyone wanted to see a President. I was in and out of the DMV in less than 20 mins! I haven't had an opprotunity to check for the other VINs. Since I have a new problem I'll have the time to do some research.
