Steering column issues
In the process of restoring my truck. When I bought it, it had the original steering column in the truck, the truck didn't run that much so I would only drive it around the block, but when I did if the truck got to moving about 30 mph it would bounce out of gear. I figured when I installed my new steering column and linkage this problem would be fixed but seems like its going to be the same exact way. I haven't driven it around the block yet but when moving through the gears it goes very easily. Any idea what the problem could be?

It is column shift with a 383 engine. Has a turbo 400 transmission

Could possibly be the detent mechanism inside the trans. If you take the linkage rod off at the lower end and shift the trans by hand (block the wheels or use the emergency brake) can you feel it snap into each gear? There should be a distinct lock into each position. Let us know what you find. LockDoc

Sounds like a broken transmission or engine mount or possibly the linkage is slipping where it connects to the steering column.

It could also be that the shifter tube is stuck in the down position or the lower tube arm is bent down. Does it shift into Park OK? Any chance you can post a couple of pictures of the lower column under the hood? Make sure one of them is from directly above the shift linkage. LockDoc
